All the guys and I sat in the pizza shop as they all tried to hit on the hot girl working there. All I could focus on now was Kelli, and how much I actually loved her. I couldn’t wait for Brooke to get here, just so I could be an asshole to her.
I knew I had the power to make someone feel like the lowest piece of shit, just like I could make them feel like the most important person in the world. And I loved that.
“I’m sure you’re excited to see your girlfriend, Code,” Duke said to me. “And Kelli.”
“Shut the fuck up, words can’t even describe how much I hate Brooke,” I spat.
“What??” he laughed in shock. “Just yesterday you were practically having sex with her in the park, now you suddenly hate her?”
“I would never have sex with a girl who’s been banged by every single guy in the state. That girl is a custy whore and it’s disgusting. Just thinking about her disgusts me,” I said.
Kelli walked into the pizza shop, her beautiful face lighting up with excitement from finally seeing me. I smiled back at her and she sat on my lap, giving me a long, much needed kiss, reminding me even more how much I loved her and how lucky I was to have her. When I pulled up, that’s when I finally noticed Brooke, with another unreadable expression on her face.
I smiled at her, because that’s what ‘friends’ did, right? Friends who meant nothing to each other, but acting as though they did to be polite?
She looked me up and down, scanning my body to find any traces of the guy she knew yesterday. She could keep looking all she wanted—she wasn’t going to find anything.
“I have a secret to tell you,” she sat down on Carter’s lap, flirting with him because I wasn’t going to flirt with her. She acting like she was going to whisper something in his ear but instead kissed him on the cheek and giggled. He acted unfazed by it, continuing to eat his pizza.
Kelli rolled her eyes subtly, trying to hide how annoyed she was. Everyone else was annoyed too, but they didn’t even try to hide it. I looked at Brooke and rolled my eyes—I couldn’t even look at her.
“Brooke, why don’t you go home?” Graham flat out asked her.
Brooke widened her eyes a little bit, caught off guard that he told her to leave. Kelli obnoxiously laughed, not even trying to hide her happiness that for once, someone didn’t want Brooke around. Mattie and Jace exchanged looks, Carter kept eating his pizza, Duke pretended to text someone—everyone tried to play it off like they didn’t hear it. But I just sat there, doing absolutely nothing. I didn’t have to do anything for her. It was her boyfriend’s job to protect her. Not mine.
She gave me a disappointed look like I should have done something. “Alright,” she said, realizing I wasn’t going to do anything for her.
