Josh was shocked at my agreement, maybe at the fact that we things might be serious between one another, or that because I said yes it means he actually needs to tell me.
I wait, wanting to give him time to process and get ready.
"From the beginning?" He spoke as if anxiety was slowly crawling up his neck, ready to scream out.
Bravery took over, as I grabbed his hand and our fingers intertwined. Sparks and warmth surrounded us just by that one small action. Normally Josh is the stronger one and I'm the weaker one but from the look in Josh's eyes, he needed me to be their and comfort him.
He shut his eyes, reliving the memories, and began his story. "You may have known the old me from middle school and at the start of high school, everything was going well my family were strong, mom and dad in a happy marriage in love with one another. Soccer was fun, my friend were great. Until one day. Tuesday the 8th of April, I had just finished soccer practice and went home to find mom wasn't there, she normally came home before school had even finished, but she wasn't there.
I called her and thank fully she picked up, her last words were 'Hi Josh tell your dad that I wont be coming home and I will see you-' until a car drove right into the drivers side of her car killing her within seconds the sound of the crash hurt my ear as the call got discontinued.
That sounds haunts me every time I shut my eyes, the thought that she died hearing that... On the call she sounded nothing like my mom, she was angry, cold hearted but I didn't know why until I found dad.
He had been having an affair with another woman for 6 months and mom had just found out through a picture on face book of them kissing. Heartbroken she went to our house packed all her things and went to drive to her sisters, the driver that crashed into her was the woman my dad had an affair with but she only broke an arm.
She wasn't arrested as apparently it was moms fault for being on the phone. Dad went mental after moms death, he never saw his affair again and ended up turning to drink and violence.
That's why I gave up and got this bullshit reputation of a bad boy, I missed days at school as when dad drank he took his anger out on me so much that my limbs were bruised and I couldn't move, it doesn't happen as often as it use too but as you can see by my face, when it does happen it's bad."I was so shocked at his story but at the same time it made sense. His story moved me, I had a massive lump in my throat where I couldn't swallow or get rid off. I squeezed his hand as if to say thank you.
Josh looked relieved to have said everything, but relaying the memories looked so painful.
Isabelle say something to make him feel better, but what can you say?
I looked at him and whispered "Josh you are the bravest person, I know."
He looked at me, pain was evident behind the mask he wears he doesn't say anything as I think he has had enough of talking, he just looks at me in a way that you know he was glad to tell someone but also glad that I listened.
Before I tell my story, I look away and say, "Things do get better."
It wouldn't help but I knew at this point in our lives we both need to remember that.
I feel his eyes staring at me as I look at the ocean, here goes...
Josh told his truth, now I must tell mine.
