Chapter 11

    We were headed to the airport to visit my family and I was kind of nervous. I knew this trip could either be good or bad. Either my family can accept Dominic and our engagement or they won't. No matter what happens, that won't change the way I feel about Dominic. At the last minute, Hakeem couldn't come with us. Not sure why but im not tripping about it. I know he wanted to come and be there for support. The whole flight there, Dominic reassured me that everything was going to be fine. I knew in my head, everything wasn't going to be fine. Dominic just don't know my family, well he just don't know my mother. That's the only person I know that's going to give us hell. We landed and I got more nervous. I just know my mother was going to make this a terrible trip. You ok baby, Dominic asked? Just nervous, I said while rubbing my hands. I told you it's going to be fine. You just don't know my mother baby. She is going to make this trip a disaster. Just be positive, it'll be fine. No matter what happens, that won't change how I feel about you. I know baby, it won't change how I feel either. So you shouldn't be nervous then. I really wish you would relax Olivia, Hailey said. You know how my mother is Hailey. Yeah I know but at least be positive about it. If y'all love is real, what other people think won't matter. Hailey is right baby, I told you the same thing when you met my family. I would try to relax. We arrived at my parent's house and I was trying to calm my nervous. 

    We walked into the backyard and I was sooo happy to see my dad. Daddy! Baby girl! I missed you so much dad. I missed you too. Hey Hailey! I didn't know you were coming. Hakeem was supposed to come too but something came up. Dad, this is my boyfriend Dominic. It's nice to finally meet you, my dad said. Where is mom? She's inside with your aunts. You can go speak, ill stay here with your dad. You sure? Yes, go see your mother. Remember the promise you made, Dominic said. Yes, I remember. I wasn't excited at all to see my mother nor my aunts. I know they'll backup what she says and how she feels. Olivia! Hey Aunt Maggie! I haven't seen you since your 16th birthday, you look so beautiful. Hey Aunt Stephanie! Hey Liv! You haven't called me that since I was a kid. I'm shocked you came, Aunt Maggie said. Why? I thought since the big fallen out you and your mother had, you wouldn't have came. I wasn't going to miss my dad's birthday. Speaking of your mother, Aunt Stephanie said. Oh lord, where is she? She went upstairs to get something. I wanted to talk to you before she came back down. She is really hurt by what happened between y'all before you moved. You have to make this right Liv. I didn't do anything to her, I said. You put your hands on her, I think that's something. What? I didn't touch her, I said in a shocked tone. I couldn't believe my mother lied like that. At the same time, I can believe it. My mother is good at playing victim and making people feel sorry for her. Knowing this, makes me not wanna talk to her at all. I wanted to go back outside and enjoy my dad's birthday. 

    This is the kitchen, my dad said to Dominic. Your dad was showing me his car collection. Who is this handsome thing, Aunt Maggie asked? Aunt Maggie and Stephanie, this is my boyfriend Dominic. Ohhh this is the man we heard about. I hope you heard good things, Dominic said. I just heard you were old enough to be dating me, Aunt Maggie said. You are a beautiful woman but im more than happy with this young lady right here, Dominic said while grabbing my hand. So what you do Dominic? I'm a plastic surgeon, I just opened my own private practice. Really? I sure could use a butt lift. Aunt Maggie why would you need a butt lift? I'm trying to get this thang to stop scrubbing the back of my legs when I walk. I don't know about a butt lift but I could use a full body lipo, Aunt Stephanie said. I'm trying to get my body right so I can catch me a man like you. While we were laughing, my mother walked in. The whole vibe instantly changed when she walked in. 

    Hello mother! Daughter, my mother said. Mother this is my boyfriend Dominic; Dominic this is my mother. My mother gave Dominic this cold stare. It's nice to meet you, Dominic said. My mother didn't say anything. The ham need a few more minutes, my mother said. She completely ignored Dominic, didn't really acknowledge he was there. I'll go back outside, Dominic said. I think you should stay, my dad said. Ladies would you excuse us for a minute? My dad pulled my mother into the living room. Honey stop, my dad said. Stop what? You know what im talking about. Just be happy our daughter came home to visit after being gone for 7 months. You see how old this man is? Yes, but it's nothing we can do about it. You see how big she's getting? I'm not about to do this with you. It's my birthday and I would like if my 2 favorite girls act like a family. You stay right here, don't move. Baby girl, come in the living room. We wanted to spend a few minutes with y'all. So Dominic tell us a little about you. Well im 33, im a plastic surgeon, I just opened my own private practice, I don't have any kids, never been to jail, don't drink, nor smoke. My mother left me when I was 9 years old. I'm so sorry to hear that, my dad said. I was raised by my grandmother, she got sick and insisted I put her in a nursing home. She wanted me to put all of my time into my career. What made you get into plastic surgery? I wanted to make a difference in people life. I want to be able to give people a new light on life. Just to see the look on their face when they see their results, it makes me appreciate my job a whole lot more. What made you wanna have your own private practice? Your daughter actually encouraged me to do it. With the company I was working with, I was limited to what I can do. Your daughter suggested I start my own private practice so I can get further in my career. The whole time we were talking, my mother was just sitting there with a disturb look on her face. Honey, is there anything you would like to ask Dominic? Don't really care to ask him anything. Dominic was rubbing my hand when my mother looked at my ring. What is that on your finger? I wanted to wait until we came to visit, we're engaged. Congratulations! My mother just sat there, looking. I wasn't surprised at all she didn't look happy. So that's why y'all got engaged because you're pregnant?
