Chapter 15

Amy’s eyes shot open, “ROCKET!” she warned and Susan slammed on the brakes and turned the wheel changing the angle and direction of the car, hoping it would be enough to avoid it.

The rocket whizzed pass the front of their car and slammed into a parked car, where it exploded. The sounds of bullets striking the armour sounded much like hail stones striking a tin roof and drew their attention away from the burning car. Bullets lodged in the glass but didn't travel further as the glass was rated as bullet proof.

"Where are those shots coming from?" Sarge called into the cars' radio, "Susan get us moving find us a spot where we aren't so venerable." He ordered.

“Sorry Sarge; can’t locate the source of the gun fire, not from where we are.” Drifter’s voice came though the radio.

“Get ready to go, we’re booking it.” Sarge replied as he got his field map ready to give directions.

"Rocket… reverse," Amy warned Susan.

Susan threw the car in reverse, going up a curve and onto pavement, only just narrowly avoiding another rocket. People were screaming and running for cover and to get out of the way from the gun fire and rockets. Susan threw the car back into drive and drove along the pavement quickly followed by the other car. She pulled on the wheel hard to negotiate the tight turn and shot out across an intersection and down a vacant bit of road. Susan took another tight turn sending Amy’s body into Sarge’s.

"Sorry should have warned you Susan's a mad driver," Sarge told her.

"Not as bad as Gillian," Alanna commented while looking behind them, "he just took out a fire hydrant and hot dog vender to make that turn."

“Go left next turn!” Sarge commanded.

“No next right!” Amy corrected.

“Now children just pick a turn,” Susan replied. “QUICKLY!” She added as both turns were coming up.

“Right!” Sarge barked, he knew following Amy’s instincts would keep them out of danger, his finger followed the road Amy wanted and could see far more ambush points but Amy wouldn’t lead them into a new ambush.

Susan turned right and after going a few blocks she finally pulled over and was out of the car using the door to shield herself as she scanned the area. "Clear," she called out. Sarge hopped out and scanned the area his gun ready. They had only managed to get four blocks away but it was still far enough to regroup. As they got out of their cars they knew that any hope that Amy had been wrong was gone.

"How the hell did they know we were taking that route?" Mac demanded. He was shaken by the unexpected attack.

"They didn't, they probably had positioned ambush spots all over the place," Lock-heart told Mac.

Amy took several deep breaths and sat on a planter box, she quivered gently as she had never been in a fire fight before.

Susan knelt before Amy, "You okay?"

Amy shrugged, fighting in a practise ring was nothing like actual fighting, she knew she was immortal but that didn’t mean she didn’t have self-preservation instincts that screamed at her to run and hide. Instincts she was going to have to ignore today, she couldn’t let this happen again, which meant she had to pull herself together.
