Chapter 2

Two days later Nathanael walked into the office of a human tied to the pack, he had begged her receptionist for five minutes and as she was Were she had conceded. Dr Eva Fitzgerald was a busy woman she had told him twice before relenting and letting him through. He needed a second opinion on Amy’s healing rate and the only human doctor he knew who dealt with humans but was bound to the pack was Eva. He worked rarely with humans, living humans at least as he was the county Medical Examiner. He could tend their wounds and knew basically how to keep them alive until he could turn them over to one of their own. Wolfgang however would not let her leave and she would not understand if he brought Eva in to look after her. Not without a serious conversation with her, a conversation that by rights was Wolfgang’s to give.

She glanced up and frowned. “Nathanael…” She said in surprise wondering what he was doing here. “What can I do for you?” She asked as she righted her thick black rimmed glasses, her coffee with cream coloured skin was highlighted by the natural light falling through the windows behind her. Her dark curly hair was clipped back but still left loose. She leant back in her chair rearranging her jacket as her honey brown eyes glanced over Nathanael, it hadn‘t been that long ago when she first met him.

She only knew Nathanael through her husband, he had stumbled into their home hurt badly and instead of going to hospital or letting her treat him he called Nathanael who patched him up. That was the day she learnt the man she loved was Were. It had explained why he would disappear on her frequently and the many inconsistencies she had witnessed but brushed off.

When Nathanael left he had then gone on to explain that he had been meaning to tell her but every time he tried his nerve failed. He didn’t want to lose her, he couldn‘t lose her, she was his life. He then went to bed in the spare room giving her time to think. It had shocked the hell out of her, not the fact he was Were, she knew Were existed and was even a member of the Were free rights movement but that he had kept such a big secret from her. She had thought he couldn’t lie to save his life, that he was a terrible liar… how wrong she was.

She had then woken him and demanded answers. He answered every question she put to him with brutal honesty which she had come to expect from him outside of the whole Were issue. Once she stopped firing questions at him he told her one thing that nearly shattered her. I will understand if you leave, I never meant to hurt you or lie or keep such a big secret.

She grinned as she remembered the stunned look on his face when she slapped him and told him if he ever lied to her again she would kill him.

Nathanael grinned when he noticed her faraway look vanish. “Where were you?” He asked.

“Remembering the night we met.”

He chuckled and sat. “Heard Brad is going to turn you?”

She nodded. “Yes, he asked for permission, whatever that means.”

Nathanael chuckled, “It means he got your permission, we don’t interfere with each other’s mating. The reason he has held off taking you is your living situation, you live in an apartment block and you both will be loud.”
