Later that afternoon, I practically fidgeted with every dress I had in my bag. The first attempt was a black and white contrast collar dress, but it didn't feel right for the moment. A following solution looked to be a floral Jacquard seam dress, but all it did was make me wonder what the hell was going through my mind at the time of the purchase. The final dress that felt right and made me feel confident was a dress from Forever 21 that was a simple lace skater dress that was black and had long laced sleeves. My lips were drowned in red lipstick, making my lashes long and bold. I applied water proof eye liner, knowing it would be a messy night somehow in some way. The finishing touches were simple and took under five minutes with earrings and a necklace. The smoky eyeliner and light hint of black-grey mixed well with my skin tone, highlighting every feature I was proud of. I looked in the mirror and evaluated every single thing I had done in the last hour to meet every inch of perfection. It wasn't my perfection, but I had hoped it was Zayn's type of perfection.
"Going somewhere, Serenity?" I heard a voice call.
I jumped and looked at the mirror, seeing Nathan in the reflection with a suspicious look on his face.
"Yeah, I have to be somewhere. I'll be back though." I gave him a small smile, but received nothing but a stern, concerned judgment from his behalf.
"Where? It is getting very dark early. It is not safe for a beautiful lady to walk around so beautifully dressed." He bought up my hand and kissed it.
I stared and inhaled a bit sharply, exhaling a little slower and patiently. Nathan's eyes twinkled up at mine, pleading me not to go.
"Nathan, please just let me go, I'll be back. It's just a dinner date with a friend."
"You have made friend so quick? What is this friend's name?"
"Uh..yeah. It's easy to make friends here and her name is Denise. Her husband just broke her heart and left her and all she needs is someone there."
Nathan stared at me, unsure.
"I come with! I just need to put on fancy suit."
"No!" I quickly protested.
"What?"
"It's just a girl's night. She'll hate me if I take such a handsome man that is perfect." I kissed up to him in hopes he'd stop insisting.
"You are very cute. Um, okay. Where will you be so I may pick you up later? I do not want wish for you to walk alone in dark night. Very dangerous."
"It's that little restaurant a few blocks from here next to some tourist shop and a lake." I lied with a smile.
"I pick you up in two hours." He smiled and leaned in for a kiss.
I covered my mouth and faked a cough, looking down.
"I'm gonna go. See you later." I put on perfume and ran my manicured fingers through my soft hair, leaving in a rush.
Nathan licked his lip and stared, watching me walk into the night with a disapproving nod. He sighed and his eyes went wide, remembering the letter. A flashback hit him, making him realize that the letter was left in the back pocket of his trousers. The doubts were a non stop light switch in his mind, being turned on and off, but he couldn't fight the doubt any longer.
"No, no, no." He muttered to himself, running into his room and rummaging through his neatly folded clothes, violently shaking them in hopes of the letter falling out.
Nathan cursed under his breath in French, looking around the room. The expression on his roster only cued for a haggard French man who knew of no solution. The cabinet where he kept his liquor hidden was now opened by his warm hands. He poured himself a shot and loosened the tie on his suit, sitting by the window in thought.
"No.." He dropped the glass cup and stood, "I will not let another man have her."
..
Zayn got out of the shower, seeing Natalie laid up in his bed with a cigarette in her mouth. He walked over and stole her cigarette, taking a quick puff and handing it back to her.
"Why are you in here in my room? I thought you said you were going to do something, at least that's what you told me in the morning." Zayn questioned, pulling out a white button down from the unpacked bag.
"I'd like to say the same to you." She replied and sat up, "I just lost the urge to do anything tonight. Can you please just come into bed with me? I stole some fancy French drinks for us to get piss drunk."
"Sounds good, but I told you I have something important to do tonight, so if you're gonna drink, do it in your room and don't wander off."
Natalie sighed and watched him pack out all the small essentials to form a suit. She rolled her eyes and watched him get dressed into it. No sane woman would be able to take their eyes off Zayn if he wore that suit every day. He went without the coat, keeping the black tight jeans with the white button down tucked in along with the tie. Natalie bit down on her lip, completely turned on by the sudden change. Zayn's face was as clean and smooth as a baby's bottom with hazel eyes striking the amazing cheek bones he was gifted with. His eyebrows were perfectly imperfect in an odd way that made him even more attractive.
"Why the fancy stuff?" Natalie questioned, looking at him through the mirror's reflection.
"I told you it's private. Just have your things packed because we leave around 5 in the morning." He applied a strong cologne that sent chills down Natalie's spine and triggered an undeniable desire of angry sex.
She stood and walked over, placing her hands on his shoulder from behind and tip toeing to whisper into his left ear.
"When you get back, that suit is coming off and we are going to have a night you are never going to forget." She added a smirk at the end, very confident of having a good night.
"Believe me, we both want it to be a night we'll never forget." Zayn said, indirectly referring to the plans he had.
"What time will you be back?"
"Don't know." He hardly gave her any attention, tucking his lighter and cigarette into his coat pocket, leaving in a hurry.
"The last thing you'll do is leave me for her." She hissed to herself once he was gone.
Natalie rummaged through her things and pulled on a very revealing dress that embraced her curves and made her breasts look perkier and very attention grabbing. Her legs were long and soft, desirable by any man, or even woman. Her make up was very bold as well with fake lashes being placed and her eyebrows being penciled in to pin point perfection. Her eyes were bought out to the stars thanks to the glittery eye shadow she had applied. The long blonde hair fell past her breasts by a few centimeters as she let the curling iron twirl the ends of her hair in a salon styled fashion to meet the perfection she had easily obtained, image wise.
"Ready or not," She put on a coat and reloaded a gun, tucking it into one of the pockets, "Here I come."
..
I walked for about ten minutes, freezing and feeling idiotic for not taking a jacket or what not. Tons of cat whistles didn't help at all as I quickly walked away from a few drunks who were too drunk to know left from right or up from down. I crossed my arms and walked, seeing the bridge and making an immediate stop with a small gasp.
Zayn stood there just like he promised he would be, smoking a cigarette and tracing back his foot steps in small circular motions in a worried fear. I took a deep breath and walked, looking down at my feet as my heart was an inch closer to being pulled out of my chest by God himself with each foot step. Zayn was just so bloody attractive that it made anyone uneasy and nervous, especially knowing that temper of his. The sound of my heart beating sounded as if it were getting louder and louder on a speaker for every person who passed me by could listen to. I stood at the end of the bridge, impressed by how serious he took this by the way he dressed. Of course he was smoking, but in general, I was impressed by it all. Another step.
Another step.
Getting closer.
Another step, but bigger.
Baby steps.
One more step.
Zayn was in front of me before I could recollect the millions of thoughts I had running around in my head that sounded like one big scream. He lifted my chin and made me look him in the eyes. In so little time, I couldn't believe I had forgotten what a glimpse of a locked prison in a fictional heaven looked like in his eyes. My bottom lip quivered with the stinging cold wind and nervousness. Zayn took his coat off and put it on me, bringing my chin back up as soon as I looked down.
"This letter..I.." I pulled it out and was speechless again.
"I meant every word I said in it. I'm sorry for being such an idiot and for hurting you so much. Natalie was the love of my life.."
I looked down again once he said that, but his finger tips that scented mens' cologne and smokes bought my stare back up.
"Was." He repeated, "She was the love of my life, but it was stupid. She walked out on me when I thought she'd be the one. I don't know how you've put up with me for so long. I drive myself insane sometimes, but you always try to keep it all together. You want a normal life and I want to try and give you that."
"Zayn, why..why did it take you so long to say this? Have you always felt this way?"
"We've established that I'm an idiot, right?"
I laughed a little, putting a strand of my hair behind my ear. His hands met mine and his fingers playfully rubbed the tips of my nails, slowly closing our hands into a rest in a laced form with a tight hold.
"Can we start over? A whole new life? Just you and me. No bars, clubs, drugs, problems. I just want you to be as happy as I want to be." I got closer to him until we were within kissing distance.
"We can try. I promise I'll treat you better from now on." Zayn let go of one of my hands and bought me closer to dig into the coat pocket to pull out a lock.
The lock had our names written on it, but the lock itself was a surprise. Zayn was going to make this commitment and at that point, I was convinced he was being dead serious. He unlocked the lock and put the key in his mouth to twist the lock to the side.
"You know what this is, right?" He asked, taking the key out of his mouth and spitting out the bitter taste of metal.
I nodded.
"Well, here's my promise. I, Zayn Malik, promise to love you for the rest of my life. I know it seems like a big thing, but I'm convinced of it and I know I can love you better than anyone can if you give me a chance. I promise I'll take care of you when you feel sick, I'll bring you soup when you have a cold, make sure you're warm on every cold Winter night, hell I'll even hold your hair if you throw up from a hangover we're gonna have some night."
I laughed a little, fighting back the tears of joy I desperately was in search for.
"The only promise I really want to keep is to love you every single day I can breathe and to make sure you're happy. I love you Serenity."
My heart fluttered in a sudden rush, seeing how his eyes drastically made a change. The first time we met, they were pitch black and had no sign of feeling or soul in them. As time passed, they grew into their color and were two beautiful works of lost art. Now, they were fully bright and hazel, testing out these emotions he was now getting to feel.
"I love you Zayn." I whispered with a fragile crack in my voice.
Zayn held my hand still, using his free hand to attach the lock to join the hundred of others. Some were old and rusty, timing back to old wars, violent riots and past lives dating more than over a decade ago. I heard the click of the lock and he looked at the key.
"May I?" I held my hand out for it.
Zayn smiled and nodded, handing me the key, but keeping a little hold of it, catching onto my idea. We counted to three silently and threw the key. It fell and was long gone in the water.
"You do realize that if we break our love promise, we're cursed for the rest of our lives, right?" I smiled.
"My life has always been hell, it can't get worse." He shrugged, "Besides, I'm sure this is the promise I'll always keep."
"I'm sure of this too. I love you." I turned to face him fully and knew it was coming, "Kiss me.."
Zayn leaned in and placed his hands on my hips, greeting my lips with his. His lips were warm, resembling the feeling of getting inside after a snowstorm and getting under the blankets in bed with hot chocolate. I kissed him back, cupping his face and smelling the after shave he had on. The moment where his lips would leave mine was already upsetting me and making me grow even more fond of the moment.
..
Nathan had been walking around, looking around for me. He asked time after time for me at the restaurant I had told him to, but clearly there was no reservation at all under either name. The temper stored in him began to boil, unsure as to whom he was upset with. He pulled the bottle out of his coat and took another large gulp of alcohol, remembering where the bridge was. His blurry vision made him stumble and fall a few times, but got him close enough to give him a clear view of us.
"You betrayed me. I knew it!" He walked closer.
..
Natalie casually strolled out and kept a watch from a distance of us. The smile on Zayn's face made it harder for her to control herself. She watched as the lock was sealed, the key was thrown and how the kiss was long and meaningful, no matter how much she attempted to deny it to herself.
"Goodbye kisses are always hard." She snickered, taking the gun out and testing out an aim to see the fair distance chance.
..
"You look really good. Can you get another lock and promise me you'll wear dress shirts every day?" I giggled.
Zayn laughed and shook his head, "You're crazy."
"A good kind."
"Yeah.." He sighed and bit his lip, "There's one more thing left that I have to do."
"Serenade me with hundreds of white doves flying above us as you carry me off into the sunset on a Pegasus?"
"Serenity, I'm serious." He tried hard not to laugh and I poked at his cheek for it.
"I partially was too.." I hid my laughter and controlled my maturity level once I saw he was serious, "What is it?"
Zayn took a deep breath and got down on one knee, "Will you marry me?"
