I came round to find myself in a sterile room, lying on a comfortable bed. I could hear a bleeping slowly getting faster as panic set it.
I abruptly sat up to find myself hooked to machines. "What's happening?!"
Diego was in my face suddenly, his hands holding my cheeks. "Shh, Alley. You are safe."
"Diego..." I panicked, searching his weary face for any sign of hope. "... The baby?"
Diego breathed deeply, "We do not know yet, Gatitio."
I lay back my hands protectively covering my stomach around the wires connected and burst into tears.
Diego's arms encased me as I sobbed, his warmth enloping me.
Time escaped me as I cried, I just knew that for however long I did cry, Diego held on to me. I felt small kisses touch my temple.
Eventually after having no more tears to cry, Diego handed me a hankecheif, his own eyes tense. I wiped my eyes and blew my nose.
"It's all my fault," I whispered, broken. "I wished I wasn't pregnant."
"No!" Diego's own voice faulted, becoming thick spanish. "It is mine. I should not have said those things to upset you!
Diego leaned forward and put his head in his hands spitting out Spanish that I did not understand.
I sat in silence, not knowing what to do. Never had I seen a man look so broken and lost. Diego was like an inpenatrable force. An undefeated God.
My hand reached to the one in Diego's hair and took his hand in my own. A small squeeze of my hand, Diego whispered, "I am so sorry."
I took his hand and placed it on my stomach, the defeat in his tone worrying. "It's not your fault, Diego."
I took in Diego's beautiful face as he stood and pressed a soft kiss upon my stomach. Could I really be reassuring this spanish God?
The sound of the door opening broke our little bubble and a grey haired doctor in his late fiftes entered the room, his hair completely grey, complete with muschtashe across his top lip. Diego stood abruptly
"Good evening, senor Mendez," The doctor shook hands with him. "Ah, Miss Knight. You are back with us. I am Dr. Gardener."
The doctor smiled in my direction, his twinkling blue eyes warm and full of hope.
"What happened?" I questioned, hesitantly, "Is my baby okay?"
The doctor picked up a clipboard from the end table next to me and smiled reassuringly. "Miss Knight you fainted. But don't worry, it was only for a short while."
Dr. Gardener began taking notes from the machine, the room becoming quiet.
"The good news is, the blood expelled gives me no reason to incline that you have miscarried. Your bloods show continuous rising of HCG - a good sign! However, until I complete an internal scan we will not know for sure. The machines here are not strong enough to pick up the baby's heartbeat, however if the dates are correct then hopefully it will show in an internal scan."
"Okay," I nodded, eagar to get started.
"Do you feel well enough to walk?"
Diego growled, "I do not want her walking!"
The doctor simply smiled, "A walk won't hurt."
"Im fine," I piped up, sitting up as the doctor began removing the wires attatched to me.
