Modern AU: Jack has a crush on a girl who won't date even speak to him. But that doesn't stop him from loving her.

It was a cold day in Burgess, russling leaves and warm heavy coats. The leaves had all fallen off, and winter was soon to be expected.

In the winter time, a boy named Jack and his friends would meet up for lunch in the cafeteria after soccer practice. They would laugh at stupid jokes that only they sould find funny, because only they would understand. But today, as jack had sat down at his table with his two best friends, he sat slumped in his chair and remained quiet. (Something very unusual for the talkative boy.) One mightve suspected he was angry, or tired if you didn't look close enough. By the way he forcefully denied his food and slumped back down, it could've been anywhere in between. But no, it was just that he was confused.

"Hey, buddy, are you feeling okay?" His best friend Flynn smirked, half amused, half worried (a side that he would hide.)

But the boy just shrugged, and sighed heavily. Something was up, but even he himself wasn't sure.

his friend Henry, (which he liked to call, hiccup, since he tended to get scared so easily,) showed his concern openly, however. "what's up man?"
As they sat at the round table in the middle of the cafeteria, none of them ate. Not even Jack, who claimed that The cheese pizza was his absolute favorite.

They would've, but they we're too busy trying to get Jack to look up.

After quite a long while, right before they we're about to give up, Jack threw his head up and blurted, "There's this girl."

Eugene smirked again, challenge always did, and Hiccup, well he raised an eyebrow, which was equally characteristic.

"Did you score?" Flynn asked. Hiccup have him a look that said, what the fuck, dude? But at the same time, he was wondering the same thing.

Jack simply shook his head. "I can't even get her to talk to me." He saw them trying to suppress a laugh.

"Dude, you've scored a whole bunch of girls before." Flynn said, Hiccup agreeing. "why do you still want her?"

Before Jack could answer, Hiccup added, "who is it, anyway?"

Jack took a deep breathe. "It's Merida."

This time, Flynn rudely let out a deep chuckle, ignoring the scowl from Jack.

"Shut the hell up, man!" Jack roared, slumping down in his seat, crossing his arms.

"I-Im sorry man, but... why? She's not a cheerleader, or a-a.m.... A.m... Well... She's not that hot." Flynn concluded.

As bad as Hiccup felt, considering he didn't think Merida was all bad, he said,"We'll neither is the name Eugene, but your parents-"

"Shut up!" 'Eugene' scowled. He turned back to Jack to continue, "But come on, dude. Why?"

He knew why he was asking. Jack could get any girl he wanted, if he tried. Any girl, that is, except Merida.

She never talked to Jack, but she never really talked to anyone. Jack didn't want her because he couldn't have her. That part was just a big obstacle. Why he liked her? Well, the reason he was able to say out Loud.

"You're right, Flynn. She's not hot. She's absolutely beautiful, though. I like the way she blows her hair out of her face instead of tucking it away. I like how she hides her face, even when we play archery, and still get a bullseye. I don't know why I started liking her, it's just that she smiles at me sometimes, and not because she might like me. But it was almost like she wants to get to know me. Or to just say hi. She doesn't think of me as a prankster, she doesn't think badly with assumption, like everyone else. She... She's... I dunno. She just gives me a feeling in the put of my stomach, it makes me feel kind of sick. But I kind of like it."

Flynn and Hiccup stared at Jack, same plain expressions but different thoughts.

Jack turned his head quickly to stare at the girl. She stayed at the edge of the table, reading a book in her lap. Her eyes never left the page as she fixed her head phones, almost like a headband to her Tousled hair. Jack smiled a bit, his eyes trailing down the strands of her hair.

When Flynn cleared his throat, "Well, Romeo, While you drool over Ms. 'Shyness' over there, im gonna go. Come on Hiccup," he said, tapping his other friend on th shoulder.

"in a minute," Hiccup said. "I'll meet you outside." He stood up, and paused. Jack was still staring at Merida, and Hiccup thought up an idea.

He scrunched his hands into his pocket, and pulled out a black hair clip. "Astrid left this at my house, but I think your dream girl needs it more than she does." He slid the clip over to jack, who only glanced at it, before finally ripping his sight off of the red head.

Hiccup left quickly, before Jack had anytime to question.

What? He thought.

Just then, as He glanced back at Merida, she slid off her headphones, letting her hair fall in her face.

As she stood up abruptly, her hair bounced as she stomped with every step.

Jack waited until after school to go through with his plan. She walked home, half way in the same direction as him, and he normally took the city bus anyway. But today it was worth walking.

As he ran to catch up with Merida, clutching her books, he offered conversation. "Hi."

Silence.

"You're, Merida, right?" Jack asked, as if he didn't know. She nodded. "I saw you that bullseye. The other day, it was pretty impressive." She shrugged. "How'd you do that? With your hair in your face?" She shrugged again.

An awfully long silence drifted over them. He didn't want to ask why she didn't talk, for all he knew, she mightve just been mute.

Jack decided to gather up a good amount of courage. Before he turned, he stepped in front of Merida, who's blue eyes.widened in surprise.

He pulled out the hair clip hiccup have him earlier that day. He brushed the hair out of Merida face, and pinned it back. She stood there, bewildered, when he finally says, "You know you're really pretty. you don't have to hide behind your hair."

She stayed silent long enough for Jack to realized she was probably a bit creeped out, and turned the corner simply. When he turned his back to her, he muttered, stupid, stupid.

"It's Mer." A thick Scottish accent said from behind him. Her voice practically sounded as if she we're singing to him, harmonizing.

"What?" He turned. He dropped the cool act, where he played a bit surprised.

"Yeh cn call me Mer', if yeh want." She said, loud enough for him to hear, but not very confident.

"Well, Mer," he began. "How about you talk to me again sometime?"

She smiled. "Sure."

After that moment, Merida would in fact not stop talking sometimes. But Jack never minded. He had enjoyed the wonderful sound of her voice.

I actually really liked how this turned out. I was all like YESH YESH THIS IS CUTE. THIS IS CUTE STUFF.

Idk, this might be it, but I don't know for sure.
