This is the first time I'll be writing any story not actually based off of teenagers, so ?? dunno how this is gonna go, but you can tell me!
Also, I have never seen snow before, so my accuracy will probably be suuuper unrealistic and my temperatures might be too. All I know is the temperature that allows water to freeze but i don't know what is considered freezing cold, or how the weather works?? so... apologies xx
Prompt: Jack goes to a coffee shop, but doesn't actually like coffee. Merida, the fiery barista, questions this.
It was a rather cold day, Merida was surprisingly the first to arrive to work, but she was the only one without a car to get stuck in the snow. She greeted Hiccup, who came in shortly after her, and hung up her scarf and coat to replace with the forest green apron and tied her hair up tightly above her head.
"You're early today." Hiccup commented. "Did you walk or something?" The snow came rather surprisingly overnight.
"Mm." She replied simply, not looking at Hiccup, but organizing everything over the counter before opening. Hiccup took this as a yes and looked at his watch, making that it was time for opening.
Making his way over to flip open the sign, it didn't take long for the shop to slowly grow in such cold weather. As Rapunzel finally arrived, she joined Merida long side with a smile as she did everyday, and everything was as it always was, just with a larger crowd than normal. Merida brewed and poured the coffee to perfection, and was often complimented for them. She baked the pastries and oven bakes, and brewed everything to perfection. Although Merida liked the comments of her work, she didn't see much of it. She was just following the same old boring orders. She wasn't the neatest, most presentable worker, and she often came to work in the wrong type of pants because she absolutely hated khakis, but no one seemed to notice after they had taken a nice sip of her coffee. Everything was as usual, including the customers.
Hiccup nudged her with his elbow as she shook up a can of whipped cream. "Hey," he said to get her attention. When she was done adding the whipped cream to the top of the pumpkin spiced latte with 3 pumps of caramel, as they specifically ordered, she turned to him.
"Hm?" She responded.
Seeing that he was busy whipping up the next order, he juggled the ingredients in his hands and pointed with his chin towards the customer entering the store. She paused for a second before continuing to work again. She rolled her eyes and shook her head.
"Alright Merida, can you take over for me while I take my break?" Rapunzel asked. Not many people were waiting in line, as a coffee shop usually slows down around the afternoon.
Although she didn't want to, she couldn't turn down Rapunzel, and she always waited until after rush hour. But that was always around the time that that one boy would waltz in, wait in line, have Merida shake up some ridiculous order and a strawberry cake pop, only to drink one sip of it, scrunch his nose, bag the cake pop and dump the remaining contents of the coffee, leaving about an hour later.
But Merida dealt with this everyday until her shift ended at 4. She was rather offended that he never ate the cake pops since she made them, strawberry specifically being her favorite.
She took a deep breath and plastered a smile onto her face, although by now it was like doing crunches, except she was at the point where she needed to pull herself up with her hands to achieve another crunch. "What will it be today, Jack?" She had memorized his name after many of his attempts of stupid coffee combos. He smirked, like he always does, and leaned his elbows on the table, fairly closer to Merida than the average customer would be.
He pulled down a strawberry cake pop, and merida held in any form of attitude that she so naturally spreads. "I'd like a Quad Grande, Non Fat, Extra Hot Caramel Macchiato," he replied. Oh, well that wasn't so bad, she thought. "Upside down." He winked. She continued to smile a sort of smile that seemed rather sarcastic.
"Right away, Jack." She said, grabbing a cup and placing it on the side. "I assume I will be making it this time, as usual?" She asked, in a polite-but-not-really-sort of way.
He smiled in a way that said, "yes." And she turned around, rolling her eyes so far back that he could even tell from his angle behind her.
As he dug out the cash in exact change, because, as he said, he was a 'gentleman' to do so, she slid onto the side to bashfully add the ingredients into the blender.
Muttering under her breath just enough for hiccup to hear, "What kind of bampot orders their coffee upside down??" Hiccup smirked at this comment, amused by Merida's frustration. She called out his name when the order was finished and she didn't stay for a single thank you from him.
Merida worked the rest of her shift in angst and annoyance, constantly glaring at the white haired boy.
At the end of her shift, seeing as Jack was walking out the door with a brown bag with a strawberry cake pop still fresh inide, and a cup of cold coffee (which Merida recalls having to make extra hot.)
She rushed out the door with her coat draped over her and her scarf in hand, able to see her breath in the cold weather. She ran up to him, only in a simple blue hoodie and some skinny jeans. "Hey!" She called out to get his attention.
He stopped to turn around, finding the barista attempting to run in the snow. Although he wasnt far, she was slightly our of breath when she met up with him. "I got some questions for you, Jack." She said, as sternly as she could. He simply smirked and leaned against the nearest pole like it would take a while.
Can he ever stand up straight? she thought.
She sighed. "Well, Jack," She wasn't sure where to begin, so she asked all at once. "Why do you always order the same cake pop, never eat it, have me make some crazy coffee combo that you refuse to drink more than a sip of, at the same time, every single day?" she said, exhausting herself. "I make those cake pops myself, and... everyone loves them but you! why don't you like them?"
He simply let out a chuckle, and Merida looked bewildered.
"I don't come everyday, " he responded, and Merida was about to retaliate about how he completely missed the point. "I only come on days you're there." Meridas expression changed, like she wanted to say something about how crazy and strange it was, but couldn't find the words to.
"I'm not a big fan of sweets," He continued. "I like the way your face scrunches up when you're annoyed, so I always come with a new strange idea. And I don't come when it's too crowded, because I don't wanna waste anyone's time. And it's around the time your friend takes a break, so you take over. You see, I don't come just for the coffee. I come for you."
Merida almost looked suspicious. She was on this route that said, 'hes probably a stalker.' But also, ' hes very observant and I find it strangely cute.' Merida found it strange that she couldn't distinguish him between the two.
"And it's because I like you."
That seemed to answer her question.
"And," he added, "maybe we can talk about that over some hot cocoa instead. And I'll let you have the cake pop."
HEY GUYSSSS XXXX thank you for continuing to read this, even if it says complete. But hey, I got a list of ideaas in my documents and theres probably gonna be a lot of crazy things to come.
