Why are most fish farms located in the Johor Strait, Pulau Ubin & Chek Jawa? This is because it is at a sheltered location. The narrow water ways are suitable for fish farming aka aqua culture. There is also less water current.- Kelongs are located in the open waters. A kelong is a fish farm or trapping structure built in the shallow waters off Singapore.
-Kelong (sometimes spelt Kellong) is a Malay word describing a form of offshore platform built predominantly with wood, which can be found in waters off Malaysia, the Philippines and Indonesia. Only a handful remain around Singapore due to rapid urbanisation.
- In the past, governments don't favour kelongs. This is because it is deemed to be unsustainable and Kelongs block water ways.
- Fishermen throw in the SKIN of the bread to feed the fish.
- Water monitoring system is used to monitor the quality of the water. (wifi is involved)
- Solar panels are used to supply energy to the pump in the water which provides the water with OXYGEN.
- Metropolitan fish farm, a high tech farm, is the biggest fish farm in Singapore. Above are the reasons why it is high tech. It produces 600 tonnes (600,000kg) of fish PER YEAR.
Traditional Fish Farm
The owner of the farm uses his own judgement in monitoring the fish. Doesn't spend much money on technology and uses his own instincts. When he sees fish swimming in the water, this means that they are healthy. If they are at the surface of the water, this means they lack oxygen or that they are dying. He then sprays water into the farm to circulate the oxygen around the water.Differences: Kelongs can sell the fish immediately after they are caught, regardless of size. Also cheaper. Kelong is based on a "walk-in" system. When the fish goes into the net, it is caught and sold.
Fish farms need to take care of their fish for about 6-9 months, depending on their size. They need to rear it to about commercial sized. The bigger the fish, the harder to raise. If you want to rear fish, you must have a large capital. Very expensive to start a fish farm.
Other than vegetables, we have goat's milk and fishes. Though we have a small country, we do our best to make sure we are not totally dependent on foreign import.
