Chapter 1: So we can own the night

                                                                                     2 YEARS LATER

     I sat at the windowsill with him, my young charge, my dear Kaneki.  We sat together, his small legs slowly swinging back and forth while his head leaned against my side.  I brushed my fingers through his soft black hair, watching his chest rise and fall slowly, his eyes set upon the stars lying in the sky.

He took in a small breath,"Mr. Hide?"

I brushed a strand of hair from his eyes before replying,"Hm?"  He lifted himself lightly, leaning out the window, his hand reaching out toward the heavens.

"....stars?", he mumbled out, his eyes never straying from past the window.

I smiled, an airy laugh escaping past my lips,"You'll have to speak up Kaneki."  I sat up straighter, directing my gaze to where he was staring, before looking back towards him.

He blushed lightly, stumbling out an embarrassed apology,"S-sorry Mr.Hide.  I was asking if you live up in heaven with all the stars?"

I tapped my chin thoughtfully, "Huh, yeah we do.  Never really payed much attention to them though, they're so common up there I guess I don't really notice them."

His head whipped towards me, his face filled with bewilderment,"You live with stars all around you and you don't notice them?!?"

I patted his head, shrugging,"As I said, they're common up there."

"Still......, hey, why are they common up there," he pouted, his face shifting to curiosity.  I smiled down at him, slowly standing up and stretching out my arms.

"Well, stars are very important to our kind.  They're promises, dreams, very powerful ones, almost what you humans call an unbreakable promise.  They are sacred, but common enough that you don't think much of them until you find a reason to form one.", I explained, picking him up.  I placed him in his bed, gently tucking him in, making sure he was comfortable.

"Now it's time for you to go to sleep Kaneki, it's far pass your bed time, you start kindergarten tomorrow, wouldn't want to be tired in the morning from staying up too late", I explained, turning on his teddy bear nightlight, a soft purple light covering the room.

I was about to leave when his small voice called out,"Mr.Hide?"

I turned back around, half my body hanging out of the window,"Yes Kaneki?"

His room bathed in the glow of purple, his eyes glazed with the color, blinking innocently towards me,"Can we have a star, you and I?"

I froze, stood silently, before I relaxed,"Of course Kaneki, next time I come visit we can make a star, the brightest in the sky!"

I gave him one last smile before turning around, vanishing from his room.

"How's your boy doing Hideyoshi-San?  I heard you are spending much of your free time with him, much more than any of your past responsibilities", Yoshimura-sama stated, sitting himself next to me, joining me in watching many humans passing by before us, bustling loudly.

My gaze shifted towards him," Kaneki?  Oh, he's doing great, he's starting his first day of school tomorrow, he's so excited."

He turned away from the busy sidewalk, his usual calm smile replaced by a slightly troubled face,"Hide.... You can't keep ignoring it, reality is still reality, you can't run away from it, eventually it will hit you when you are most vulnerable."

My facade crumbled, my face falling, I reached up running my hands down my face,"Just a bit longer, please, he won't let go easily, we—, we have a bond Yoshimura-sama, he won't give in so soon...."

He placed a comforting hand on my shoulder,"It's something that inevitably happens my boy, the pressures of his peers will make him cave, he's just a boy.  The need to fit in will eventually overcome whatever bond the both of you share, you know this, you've gone through it several times already.  Why are you holding on so much to this one?"

Tears started to leak from the corners of my eyes, my eyes staring into his,"You don't understand sir, Kaneki, Kaneki and I have this connection.  I can't believe he'll give up on me so easily, not after all the time we've spent together, learning to trust eachother.  I promised next time that I would visit I would form a star bond with him!  Do you see the strength of our bond now?!  For me to want to make a star bond with a young mortal, an young boy no less... do you understand the love I hold for him in my heart?"

His eyes shifted down in sadness,"Oh Hide...., a star-bond?  That'll, that'll never work out Hide.  Not between a mortal and angel, our lives, immortal, theirs only a blink of an eye for us."

I stood up rigidly, angrily wiping the tears from my eyes with my robe,"DO YOU THINK I DONT KNOW THAT, THAT I HAVENT AGONIZED OVER THE THOUGHT FOR DAYS AT A TIME??!!  I CAN ONLY ENJOY THE TIME I DO HAVE WITH HIM TO THE FULLEST!! B-before he forgets.."

Yoshimura embraced me tightly, pulling away to give me a serious look,"Hide, if that's true, then you better visit Kaneki-san soon.  You don't have much time left.  Make that star together and place it into the heavens before your time is up."

I nodded quickly, wiping the rest of my tears away,"Why does fate place such a cruel love upon me?  Have I not guarded over its people devotedly?  Without question, to the best of my abilities? "

Yoshimura shook his head, a deep sigh escaping him,"Fate is cruel, but even it knows that love in complete, something that no living being can be without.  He has a plan for you Hideyoshi-san, you just have to be patient and strong, fate makes you work for the love in life."
