Back to the present

"Sir, I've finished all my assignments for today."

"Thank you Miss Adams, though you're not done yet."

"With all due respect sir, but I was supposed to be done here two hours ago." I look at him.

"With all due respect miss, you should've done a better job in the first place. This is your first week here, so when I say that you have to work till eleven, I expect you to work till eleven without complaints." He looks at me pointedly.

"Now, I want you to clean my office and call my driver. After I leave I want you to close the office and only then, are you allowed to leave."

"You want me to clean your office? That was not in the job description."

"Well it is now."

"But sir I don-"

"Your existence gives me a headache, go stand over there."

"Excuse me?"

"Also go to a doctor and get your ears checked, I don't want my assistant's hearing impaired," I look at him like he just grew three heads. I am practically fuming, how dare he speak to me in that way. Just because he's rich doesn't mean he has the right to act like an ass.

"Why are you still standing there, you are wasting time.
I thought you wanted to get home early," he smirks at me.

I turn around start to storm out of his office, "Miss Adams?"

"Yes sir?" I say with clear annoyance in my voice.

"I expect you tomorrow at this address at five O'clock precisely," he hands me a folded note.

"Why?"

"You're having dinner with me," he turns his back towards me.

"I beg your pardon?"

"My parents found out through your parents that you're back in town, so they are throwing you a welcome back home dinner."

"That's so nice of them, tell them I will definitely be there."

"Also, wear something nice. I send a dress over to your apartment, because if I remember correctly fashion was never your strongest suit," he gives me a pointed look.

"Fine"

"Fine"

I pull down the red dress Alec picked out. It is gorgeous, a bit too tight but appropriate enough for a fancy dinner. I walk up to the massive door in front of me and ring the bell. I fumble with my fingers, it's been years since I last saw the Greene family. I hear footsteps fast approaching the door.

"Chloe" is all I hear before I am engulfed in a hug.
"Hi?" I stand still, not knowing what to do.
"I've missed you so much." The girl lets me go and takes a step backwards so I can see her.

"Nessa!" I hug Vanessa this time as tight as I can. I haven't seen Vanessa since graduation day and since I cut ties with the whole Greene family, I also cut ties with Alec's little sister. I used to babysit her all the time, she was the cutest little munchkin.

"You've grown so much, how old are you now? Sixteen?"

"Sixteen and two months"

"Of course, we can't forget those two months."

"Exactly, finally someone who understands," she gives me a big toothy grin.

"So, are you going to let me in or?"

"Oh I'm so sorry, come in," a blush creeps on her cheeks.
I ruffle her hair and walk past her in the house.

The house is even more beautiful than I expected it to be.

When I swing the door to the kitchen area open, the smell of homemade apple pies hits me and I immediately feel like home. The air is warm and sweet-smelling.

"Chloe, how nice to see you again. We've missed you." Mrs. Greene engulfed me in one of her famous bear hugs that make you feel right at home.

Mr. Greene looks over to see who walked in and grins when he sees me.

"Chloe, sweetheart, you've grown so much since the last time we saw you."

Mr. Greene may seem very intimidating at first glance, but he is a big softie at heart.

I hug him back.
"How have you been?" Mr. Greene asks me.

"I've been good, how about you guys?"

"Well, we've missed you a lot. It hasn't been the same around here. You're like the daughter we never had."

"Dad, I'm still here," Vanessa rolls her eyes.

"Oh Nessa, darling, you know I am just joking,"

"You better," she winks at her dad.

"Dinner will be ready in fifteen minutes, Nessa and Chloe, do you mind setting the table for us?"

"Of course not, come on Nessa."

Vanessa shows me where the plates are, I collect five plates from the cupboard.

"Oh, you forgot one plate," Vanessa tells me while grabbing another plate from the cupboard.

"Why do we need six plates?"

"Alec hasn't told you?"

"He hasn't told me what?"

"He ha-

"We have arrived," Alec interrupts our conversation by slamming the front door.

"We?" I look questionably at Vanessa, who is avoiding my eyes.

I walk back to the kitchen, curious to see who Alec means with 'we'.

Then I see her, Sarah O'Reilly. The girl Alec cheated with on me.
