CHAPTER FIVE
"I thought you said you were going to crash at a friend's house. Why are you stalking me?" I ask, annoyed. "Darling, I'm not stalking you. I'm merely here because none of my friends can accommodate to me staying at their house. You are my last option and only hope or I would be sleeping outside... probably on my porch." "Oh... that sucks. I guess you'll be sleeping outside, then." "Rox, come on. Please. I have nowhere else to go. I know you hate me, but please let me stay. When have you ever known me to beg? I promise after this, if you want, I'll leave you alone." "Whatever, get in the car." "You're not taking me somewhere to kill me, are you?" "No, Idiot. We're going to the store."
As I walk down the Ice cream isle, I look for Mint Chocolate Chip. I bend down to pick up a gallon off of the bottom, when Roman smacks my ass, making me lurch forward and hit my head on the shelf. I fall to the ground, and my vision starts to gain spots. It slowly fades, darker and darker. All the while Roman is laughing then immediately stops. "Roxanne, are you okay?!" The last thing I hear before blacking out is him yelling "Shit!".
I wake up to the sound of my phone ringing. I'm in my car, and it's moving, but I'm not driving. I'm so confused. I look around to see Roman driving. He doesn't pay attention to the fact that it's ringing and I don't think he's realized that I'm awake. I grab the phone to see it's my mom calling. "Hello? Mom?" Roman's head snaps towards me. "Roxie, sweetie, you've been gone an hour and I've been calling you. What's going on?" "Oh, sorry mom, my phone was on silent and there was a long line. I think they're having some sort of sale," I lie. I feel bad for lying to her, but I have no clue what's going on. "This time of night? Wow, it must be important." "Yeah," I agree, "Anyways, I'm on the way home right now, I'll see you soon, love you, bye." I hang up. Roman is still staring at me.
"What happened? Why are you driving and why did I wake up in here?" He looks nervous. "Umm... well, you see, I was kind of playing around and slapped you on the ass. You fell forward and hit your head. You passed out and I couldn't wake you. We were on the way to the hospital, but when you woke up, I turned down your street instead. Are you feeling okay? I'm sorry," he answers quickly. "I'm okay... you really had to slap me on the ass? You better have at least gotten the ice cream. My mother isn't to find out about this." "Well... I got it. And just threw ten bucks at the cashier. I was worried about you. I still care for you, you know." "Don't get all mushy on me... I still despise you."
When we arrive home, we get out, Roman carrying the Ice Cream. He rushes around to open my door, but I reject. "It's fine, I got it. I'm fine, okay. We just need to be careful around my mom." We walk inside and my mom has a surprised look on her face. "Wanna explain, Roxanne? Bringing boys in the house at this hour is prohibited." I can tell she's joking and she tries to keep a straight face, but fails and smiles. "Hey, Roman, what's up?" "Uhh," he hesitates, rubbing the back of his neck. He looks to me, as if asking me to tell her. Oh, for god sakes. "His parents still aren't home and he can't stay with any of his friends. We were his last option. I told him he could stay. "Oh, that's nice of you, Roxie. Roman, I have some men's clothes upstairs, I'll get you something to wear for tonight, and you can sleep on the couch. How's that sound, sweetie?" she asks him. "Sounds great, Mrs. Peterson."
When my mom returns downstairs, she's holding a t-shirt and a pair of sweatpants that used to be my dad's. She hands them to him and he goes to the bathroom to change. I decide to go upstairs and change as well. I wear a t-shirt and some shorts. I decide to go back downstairs for ice cream. We all sit at the table to eat some icecream and when we finish, my mom excuses herself to go to bed. "Night, mom." "Night, Mrs. Peterson." "Goodnight. Behave yourselves." She goes upstairs.
I go to the bathroom and brush my teeth, then head back to the living room to watch some tv. I'm sitting on the couch, and Roman is still in the kitchen. God, he's such a slow eater. I suddenly realize what I'm wearing shows my legs... my unshaved legs. Oh, crap. I instantly run upstairs and change to pants. I also bring down a pillow and blanket for Roman. He's sitting on the couch when I return.
"Hey," he greets. "I brought a pillow and blanket for you," is all I say. I sit down and pile them on his lap. I grab the remote and turn on cartoons. "This is your pillow, isn't it?" he asks, smirking. "It smells like you." "Ewh, creep." We watch tv for a while in almost a comfortable silence. I guess I fall asleep watching tv, because I wake up covered in a really warm blanket... a hard blanket... wait, this isn't a blanket. These are arms.
I sit up really fast and look behind me to see Roman sleeping peacefully. I hit him on the chest and he opens his eyes. "Hello, to you too. Why'd you hit me," he asks, annoyed. "Why was I laying with you on the couch, wrapped in your arms?" I fire back. "You fell asleep and were shivering, so I cuddled you to make you warmer.... You're welcome..." I'm a little appalled by this. "Ummm, thanks, I guess. What time is it?" "Close to three. I suggest you go back to sleep so you aren't tired in the morning."
I'm still really groggy and my head hurts. I'm too tired to walk upstairs, so I lay back down. Before falling back asleep, I feel Roman's hand snake around my waist. "This doesn't mean anything, understand? You were never here and nothing has changed," I mumble to him. "Got it, Princess." I start to slip under, but right before I do, I feel him kiss the side of my head. I'm already asleep.
