I've been hiding out at home, scared to leave the premises. Mom doesn't know this but I haven't gone to school since I got back. I'm terrified to leave home because I know that the second my feet touch the ground outside our property someone will show up to take me to Nathan. He has probably tried to call but I wouldn't know since my phone is still in the purse I took to the Bloods' New Years party. But Nathan himself hasn't showed up at the house for which I'm very grateful. I don't know what I'd do if he did.
Hiding is actually very boring and after a week I'm climbing up the walls. I want to do something but I'm scared to even move. I feel like there's a ticking time bomb strapped to my chest. I don't know what will set the curse off. I don't know what kind of damage I can do when it does. So far I've figured that I'm only dangerous to Nathan but I don't want to risk it. That's why I haven't tried to contact anyone, not even Andrea.
I'm on my way downstairs to get another bowl of ice cream for my heartache when I happen to hear a phone conversation. It's Dave, my mom's cop boyfriend. I had no idea he was at the house. How did he even get in? Mom's not here.
He seems to be very riled up and is practically yelling at his phone. "What do you mean? If we can do that we'll finally be able to nail these suckers!" he snaps just then and I fight not to let out a loud snort. Typical Dave. He's always talking such a big game but doesn't really do anything. He's just a bully turned cop.
"No, I'm not emotionally invested, I just want to see this city being cleaned from their scum! The Bloods have run their circus at the expense of this city for long enough. Someone needs to put an end to them. I've already spoken with my director and he has given me a green light for my operation. If the FBI is too chicken or bribed by them to participate then that's fine. Our police force can handle this one alone."
Now my smirk disappears. Dave is going after the Bloods as usual but this time he actually has people to back him up. He even mentioned FBI. He's apparently talking to a fed and trying to get them to participate in annihilating the Bloods. I feel cold all of a sudden. Alone Dave and his little crusade against everyone who isn't like him wasn't that threatening, he was merely an annoyance. But if he manages to get people behind him that's when we might have a problem.
"We will destroy them once and for all and if you'd like to be a part of that, come to my office tomorrow at nine AM sharp. Good day."
When I realize that the call is ending I start to retreat to upstairs before Dave can catch me eavesdropping. I'm on the third step when I hear Dave call out my name.
"Haley", he says with an annoyed voice but that's nothing new. Dave and I despise each other. We have never had a warm and fuzzy relationship and we never will. It's bad enough that he's dating my mom but on top of that he's on some one man mission to destroy my boyfriend and his family. Um,I mean my ex-boyfriend and his family.
I'm so busted, goes through my head before I turn around to face Dave. "Yes?" I ask, trying to play it cool.
He looks at me with a cold calculation in his eyes. "How long were you there?"
"Just got downstairs. Was it something important?" I ask innocently.
Dave obviously doesn't believe me. I don't know when he noticed my presence but it was way before he called me out my name. This is what I hate about having to deal with Dave. You can never know what's coming next, what is his endgame. He's a snake, waits for the perfect time to strike and when he does his venom is paralyzing.
"Yes, it was. Now tell me, Haley, what are you doing home at eleven o'clock on a school day?" Dave asks but he already knows. But I still try to fool him.
