Chapter 1:
Cameron’s POV:
We were a band of thieves, our outlines barely etched across the landscape. The unique pack I was a part of had already traveled from New Mexico through Colorado, destined to the dense forests of the North. I belonged to a pack of werewolf misfits. Abandoned, unusual, and alone. Well, not entirely alone. We were a family; nearly all of us owed our lives to one another. There are seven of us now: we had recently lost my closest friend, Eliza, to a run in with her fated mate. We all vowed not to fall captive to the ancient magic but I suppose promises are meant to be broken….
My paws moved across the terrain swiftly and silently. We hunted, children of the night and captives to our instinct. I couldn’t tell you where I was born, or who my parents are, or even if I had siblings. The only family I had known was this one.
FLASHBACK
I whimpered in the cold, my human flesh exposed, displaying the bruises I bore. I couldn’t remember what happened; only that I was eight, and that I was alone. I didn’t come around again until his strong arms lifted me from the ground.
“Who are you?” I asked.
“I am you friend,” he grumbled roughly.
“Yes,” I replied, “but who are you?” He smiled down at me, his pearly teeth standing out against his dark chocolate skin.
“I am your friend. I am Michael.” I sighed a breath of relief. This boy, whoever he may be, made me feel safe.
END OF FLASHBACK
Why do you always have to dwell on such morbid thoughts?! A thought popped into my head. I recognized the ‘voice’ immediately. It was Tomas, the beta of our pack. Not including Eliza, he was one of my closest friends in the pack. Like me, Michael had found him when he was young, in New Mexico. Only twelve years old, 3 years younger than Michael, he joined our band of misfits, moths after I had. Michael was our savior and our Alpha. He is the only African werewolf had ever met. Well?! Tomas thought to me again. Fuck off Tomas. I’m hunting. I thought to him, blatant annoyance conveying through our mind link. His head snapped forward as my ears pricked up sensing a rustle in the tall grass. C’mon Cam he growled obviously spotting something. We bolted across the plain, my sleek body agilely approaching our destination. Tomas was just a gray blur only moments ahead of me. I was just beginning to catch up to him when Tomas stopped ahead of me a feral growl ripping from his throat. Stop, he thought, placing himself in front of me protectively. He knew I could stick up for myself, why was he acting this way. Brother, what is it? I asked cautiously. Don’t touch them. I heard Michael order at Tomas, his voice layered with Alpha power. Who? I asked. Them he said as he stepped forward his dark brown fur becoming evident against the grass. He pointed his nose towards toward a clearing where two pups were curled together; eyes wide with fear. They were both white with splotches of black here and there. I stepped forward a smirk wanting to escape, You idiot, these are children. I thought pointedly at Tomas. I stepped forward again, an instinct deep within wanting to reach out and protect them. I couldn’t help myself, I wanted to soo badly. GO Michael thought, relinquishing his power, sensing my instinct’s desire. I moved onward a soft noise coming from my chest. Sister, Tomas thought, please just be careful. You know what this means. I did. A pack had to be close by, even if it was just a small one. These young couldn’t have gone far by themselves. I was only seventeen, but I had been in trouble with other packs before. Big trouble. I focused my thoughts on the pups. They were definitely our type. You could see human insight flash through their eyes. I moved closer again, nuzzling the female. One lone tear rolled down her cheek. Leave Michael ordered. I bowed my head, respect to my Alpha. I had already known what would happen. We had to leave them alone in the night. I sulked away, listening on the thoughts of Tomas and Michael. That was too close for comfort. I heard Tomas think. She worries me. Something has been missing for quite a while now Michael responded. A scene played across his thoughts, but I shuddered and the all too familiar picture, walking back to the pack. I knew what he was thinking. The memory haunted my nights.
FLASHBACK
“We have to go. You can trust me Cameron,” Michael said assurance in deep voice.
“I.. I can’t.” I replied, choking on my own tongue, “just go, I’m ruined.” I was huddled in the corner of a cabin when he came to me and picked me up. Saving me just like I was that lost child again. “No,” I breathed, lapsing into a deep sleep.
END OF FLASHBACK
I had been raped by the Alpha of a pack we ran into in Colorado. Ever since then I’ve wanted to take in every abandoned werewolf I lay my eyes on. I was damaged foods. Even though I hadn’t taken a vow of celibacy, there was something definitely wrong with being… forced upon. I stuttered at the thought.
Michael’s POV:
She worries me. Something has been missing for quite a while now I thought to my beta, Tomas. Yeah, she hasn’t been right since then. She wasn’t so soft. His worry seeped into my mind. She was like his sister of the flesh. They were a cute little duo with their Hispanic accents. We should get back. Everyone will be waiting. With that we sauntered away from the young. My thoughts wandered out to the pack. Are you together? We’re coming. We need to get out of here. Trouble.
Okay Mikey. I’ll round up the troops. I heard Veva think. She was the only other female than Cameron left in our pack. She was young, feisty and ready for a fight. Personally, I thought she would make a better beta than Tomas. She had all the right stuff, except she was a girl and had only been a part of our pack for nine moon cycles. I had to guard my thought from Tomas though. He had to remain confident in his postion in case anything happened to me. My primary stance against Veva being my beta was that women were ruled by their emotions. Around that time of the month and when the Wolf Moon came around she was a downright bitch. Watch yourself there she thought. Ahh, I had forgotten to my guard my thoughts toward her as well. I was always forgetting my guard. It was hard to be Alpha when your pack was your family. All that responsibility over the ones you love was a tough burden to bear. It was an even tougher burden when you had grown quite attached to someone who was broken. Cameron may not yet know it, but she was an object of my deepest affection. She reminded me so much of the mate I had lost in Africa. I couldn’t even think her name. Her death shook me to my core, causing me to flee to America. Hey boss, Veva thought, we’re all together now, Except for Cam… I don’t know where she is. Nobody does. And she’s pushing our thoughts out.
Shit! I swore, hang tight with Veva, Tomas, until I get back with Cam. I split from Tomas, wandering out into the field, following her scent. Cameron I reached out with my mind, You need to come. My ears pricked up at the sound of her wimper. I turned my head to the right, not noticing the gray wolf who had Cameron’s neck clenched between his jaws.
