The first moment that Angela could get me alone, she grabbed my arm, a little too harshly for my taste, and pulled me aside into the corner of the room. "Oh my god, Gin, tell me what happened in there!" She yell-whispered.
I looked away, embarrassed. How could I explain it to her when I had barely gotten enough time to think of it myself? "Well, he just sorta walked in and...he kissed me." I blurted out. Saying it aloud let it sink in, and I was shocked even more. "He kissed me." I said again, this time I was telling it to myself.
"Wow!" She took a second to look back at Steven. "How long? How many seconds do you think it was?"
"Twenty?" I guessed.
"Ginger you're in trouble now." She said sarcastically.
"Why, what does twenty seconds mean?" I asked.
She looked straight into my eyes. "Gin...a twenty second kiss-first kiss; I might add...that means he's in love."
Yeah, right I thought. But he did kiss me, and even I knew that it had to mean something. He wasn't just trying to cheer me up with a quick, friendly peck on the cheek. There was more. "You really think so?"
She nodded frantically. "Oh, yeah. Did he say anything to you?"
"Not really. But Angie, what if it's just because he's high? What if, in the morning, he remembers nothing? How embarrassing will that be?" I considered.
Angela seemed to think about this for a minute, which only helped to confirm my fear. But then she smiled and even giggled. "You know how you could make sure he remembers it in the morning?"
I didn't even have time to answer when Steven showed up standing next to me and answered her for me. "I do." He said and grabbed my hand. Then he pulled me toward the back door with the sign above it that said EXIT in red capital letters. He turned the doorknob and before he pulled me out with him, he turned and looked back inside.
"Ginger and I gotta be alone for a while, guys."
Joe laughed. "He's goin' for a homerun guys!" He said and then high-fived Tom. I blushed at this.
Angela looked really excited. "You guys have fu-un." She sang.
Then Steven pulled me out into the pitch black parking lot where he held my hand still and held me close to him. I thought I saw two cars in the lot, one of which I knew was Angela's. Apparently the other car wasn't Steven's because we left the parking lot and stood on the corner where he proceeded to hail a cab. When one finally stopped, he opened the back door for me and before he let me get in, he placed a gentle kiss on my cheek. Then, he walked to the other side of the car and got in. During the whole cab experience I felt as if I was floating. I actually can't remember much of what happened. I was so excited being as close as I was to Steven, that I could barely breathe, let alone think.
I know Steven paid the cabby and I know Steven hugged and held me a lot during the ride, which made me happy.
When he opened the door to his apartment he flicked on the light switch and let me in first.
"Welcome home." He said. I could tell by the tone of his voice that the high was wearing off and he was becoming lucid, which would prove to me how he really felt.
First he went to the fridge and got out two beers, handing me one just before he sat down on the red sofa.
"You guys were great tonight." I said, breaking the awkward silence that I was feeling.
He ignored my remark, a serious look set in his eyes. It was as if something was bothering him. "Can I ask you something Ginger?" he asked, taking a drink of the Silver Bullet.
I was a little bit scared of what he might ask. "Sure." I said, popping the tab on my can.
"Did you...like it when I kissed you?" This really caught me off guard. I thought the answer was so obvious that the question seemed silly. I had more than liked it. I had wanted to never let go of him.
"Steven," I started. "I loved it."
"I loved it, too."
I had the sudden urge to do something that I knew I shouldn't. Girls didn't come onto guys, bottom-line. If I wanted to do that with him, it would have to wait until he wanted it. Luckily, when he wanted it wouldn't be long.
He leaned a little closer to me which, I could only hope, meant he was going to kiss me again. When he did he chose to start at my neck and work his way up to my lips. I trembled and leaned back so that I was lying flat on the sofa cushions. He continued to kiss me; his hands were everywhere. He was holding me so tight and kissing me so fiercely I felt the truth. The truth was, even when he wasn't high, he felt it for me. I began breathing harder as Steven unbuttoned my red pants and slid his hand up my shirt. He was ready, and thought that I was. Did he know I was a virgin?
"Steven", I whispered. He stopped and looked up at me. His eyes met mine, and I knew whatever we did tonight, he wouldn't hurt me. No matter what.
"Yeah, baby?" He said sweetly.
"This is my first...my first time." I said, nervously.
"Then I'm gonna make sure you remember it for the rest of your life."
We went into his room and eventually, between kisses, found our way to the bed. His shirt was still lying on the sofa in the other room. I sat down on the bright red comforter and let Steven continue kissing and then he, ever so slightly, began to pull my jeans off. I helped him out and soon I was lying on my back, waiting. He started to take his tight brown jeans off.
"Oh shit!" I yelled.
He stopped. "What is it?"
"I have to call my house."
"Why?"
"Just to um, make sure that my mom didn't come home early or anything. She's supposed to be staying at my Aunt's but...I want to make sure." I said, standing up and looking for a phone. I turned to Steven. He was pointing to a small table next to the bed. I sat back down and dialed our phone number. After the first ring Steven started tickling me and I couldn't help but squeal. I hoped to god that my mom wouldn't answer and hear.
"Steven-stappit." I said, trying to steady my voice in case she did pick up the phone. But staying calm was hard to do considering the situation I was in. I was sitting on Steven Tallarico's bed, naked for the most part, and we were about to go all the way. Calm was the farthest from how I felt.
I hung up the phone.
"No answer." I said, smiling. That meant that I would just have to get back home relatively early and my mom would never know.
"Good." He said and kissed my neck before laying down flat on his back. "If you're, you know, not ready for this, I can wait."
"Steven..."
"Look, I just don't want you to feel like I'm only with you tonight for...this." He said. That might have been the biggest turn-on of all. How incredibly sweet he was, it knocked me out.
I let him pull me up so I was sort of on top of him. "I know. I want you Steven." I said, leaning down and kissing him.
Before anything else happened he said what I had been waiting for almost a year to hear. "I love you, Gin."
I wasn't scared. At all.
The rest of the night was heaven.
