A Bimbo on the Dash

I stared down at the thin stick of plastic in horror. I don’t even remember exactly how I felt in the few moments after the test was ready. The little circle had a cross in it, and the smaller square had a vertical line in it. I knew what that meant. I know that I wanted to cry, but also I couldn’t stop myself from smiling. There was a part of both Steven and I growing inside of me. That seemed like such a beautiful thought because I knew how much I truly loved Steven. I had dreamed of having kids with him and living together for the rest of our lives. But then I remembered when Angie first got pregnant and how Steven got so angry. If he was already getting bored with me, I could only imagine how he’d react to my pregnancy.

Angela tapped gently on the bathroom door. I think she knew already. She could tell by how I was staying silent in the bathroom.

“You okay, Gin? Can I come in babe?” she asked softly.

I heard my mom whisper something to her before I put on my robe and opened the door.

“Well?” Angie asked nervously.

“It’s positive” I simply said, holding the test in my hand.

Angela threw her arms around me in a tight hug, while my mother just smiled kind of gasping at first.

“Oh Ginger…congratulations baby.” Angie said, hugging me still.

After Angela let me go my mom walked toward me with a huge smile on her face. She could tell how emotionally confused I was, I guess, because she said, “I promise everything’ll be okay Ginger.” And then she hugged me, gently patting my back as she did so. It felt so good to be close to my mom and Angela again.

“Thank you guys so much, both of you are being amazing about this. I’m so confused about what to do.” I said, nervously.

“Ginny, you should be happy about this! Pregnancy is one of the most wonderful experiences a woman can have in her life. It’s truly a miracle, dear. You shouldn’t feel confused, Ginger, this is wonderful news. Plus, I’ll get a grandchild!” My mom was lost in thought over the wonderment that a grandchild would provide her.

“Yeah, Gin, she’s right. It can get really tedious but really, pregnancy is such a…fabulous thing.” Angie said, trying to cheer me up.

I wanted to be happy about it, I really did. But I couldn’t commit to being happy until I knew how Steven felt about it.

“What about Steven?” I asked, trying not to let on how much his opinion would sway mine.

My mom put her arm around me and led me to the living room. Angela followed close behind and then we all sat down on the couch.

“Gin, I think you should tell him right away. Trust me, if you would have heard how upset he sounded, you’d know that he’d be so excited about this.” Angie suggested.

I nodded. I did want to tell Steven. And I wanted him to be happy about it because then I would be able to be excited about being pregnant, like I knew I should be. But I didn’t want to lose Steven for good, and that’s exactly what I thought would happen after he found out.

“I think telling him is a good idea too. You need to know how he’s going to react. You have to see if he’s gonna be a responsible man and own up to what he’s done.” My mom said, a little bit accusingly.

“Mom, look, I’ll tell him, but he hasn’t done anything wrong. At least pertaining to this, I mean.” I said.

I went up to my room alone to call Steven. I didn’t want anyone to be listening to me while I told him, because I’d always had a little anxiety when it came to phone calls.
