“She’s doing well. I have to say, she was a little disappointed that her best friend wasn’t there at the hospital with her.”
I glared at Steven. “That wasn’t my fault.”
“You hit Cyrinda!”
“Are you actually defending her?” I couldn’t believe my ears. Steven sighed and said nothing. I finally turned my head and said, “And I pushed her, by the way.”
A smile crept across his face as he opened the car door. “I know, baby. Hey, come here.” He said, standing on the curb. I closed the passenger door and walked over to where he was standing. He smirked and put his arms around me.
“What am I gonna do with you?” He sighed.
I smiled. “What do you wanna do with me?”
By now an old couple was staring at us, frowning. I swear I heard the old woman mutter, “Kids theses day…their damn rocking roll”, which made me laugh slightly.
Steven ignored them and pulled me closer. He kissed me, and then trailed down to my neck, where he lingered. Finally, he whispered, “I’m sorry Ginger. You know I love you.” There was sadness in his voice, and that gave me the satisfaction I needed. “And I’m sorry I didn’t come and get you last night. I don’t even know why I didn’t.”
A tear came to my eye but I shoved it back with sheer willpower. The only thing I wanted to focus on was Steven. “I know…and I love you. It just scares me when someone so pretty comes along and flirts with you. I guess it’s safe to say I get jealous easily, okay?” I said.
Steven pulled back to look at me and brushed a strand of hair from my face. “Hey, you’re way prettier than Cyrinda. She didn’t mean anything, babe. She’s just a fan, okay?” His eyes had a genuine look about them that I couldn’t ignore. And before I knew it, Steven and I were just standing there on the sidewalk, hugging, like we were the ones who’d invented love. Finally after a few minutes, Steven pulled away and smiled. “Let’s go upstairs okay?”
I nodded and headed for the door. Steven followed close behind and slapped my ass. I laughed as I turned and did the same to him. He closed the door behind us and tickled me the whole way up the stairs. I tried to break free of his strong grip, but to no avail. I was glad to see that no one else was at his apartment. Steven and I needed to spend some time together. “I’m gonna call Angela at the hospital, okay?” I said, heading for the bedroom where I knew the phone was. I dialed the hospital number and asked to speak with Angie.
“Ginger?” She asked.
“Yeah, hey, I’m so sorry. I got um…well I got arrested actually.”
“You what?”
“The guys didn’t tell you already?” I honestly was surprised, and a little suspicious.
“Hello no! What the fuck happened?” Instantly her voice changed to her innocent gossipy high school girl voice. It made me a little sad that she wasn’t really that person anymore. She was a mom now.
“Some girl was flirting with Steven and I lost my mind…no big deal. Anyway, how’re you? How’s the baby?” I asked, excitedly changing the subject.
I could just picture a smile forming on her lips. “She’s perfect…I’m perfect.” She sighed at the end of her sentence.
“Aw, I’m so glad. Can I come and visit you later?”
“You damn well better; but don’t come now. I’m ‘bout to take a nap.”
“Okay mommy.” I joked.
