“Babe; babe wake up.” Someone, probably Steven, was shaking me awake. I ignored his attempts at first but when his lips landed on mine my eyes fluttered open. I smiled and looked straight into his eyes.
“Hi.”
“You sleep okay?” He asked. I was lying on the glass coffee table in Monty’s living room, with my right leg hanging awkwardly off the side.
“Not really; you?” I asked, remembering how he had been sleeping in the hot tub.
“Like a drunken baby.”
I sat up stretching out my stiff legs. I looked around the living room. People were sprawled all throughout Monty Rock’s house. There were bodies on the floor, on the table, on the couch and in chairs. There had to have been fifty empty beer bottles for every one person who came lying all over the floor. “What a mess.”
“We totally trashed his place”, Steven laughed.
“I feel kinda bad about it.”
“Eh, don’t; when you throw huge parties you gotta expect a huge mess.”
Right about then, Joey came strutting over toward Steven and I. He had a huge smile glued to his face. “What’re you so happy about?”
“Guess who scored with Angela last night?” He smiled. Steven looked up at him and smiled back.
“No you didn’t.” Steven said.
“No you didn’t”, I repeated. Surely he wasn’t talking about himself, because Angela was going out with Joe.
Joey was smiling even more, trying to hold back a laugh. “Yeah…I so did.”
“What are you talking about?” I shrieked. A few people asleep in the room stirred. Angela was now standing next to Joey with his shirt on. She was smiling sheepishly.
“Joey shut the hell up.” Angela nudged Joey’s shoulder.
“No; why should we hide it?” Joey said, kissing Angela’s cheek. She pulled away at first.
“Joey there’s nothing to hide.” She said abruptly. “Last night was…an accident.” Angela sat down next to me and smiled disapprovingly.
“What isn’t there to hide? Am I missing something?” The voice was Joe’s, and he was standing right behind Joey. He couldn’t have looked more suspicious.
“It’s nothing-really Joe. Don’t worry about it.” Angela jumped up and put her arm around Joe.
“We still haven’t heard the whole story, ourselves.” Steven stood up and put his hands on his hips. He looked at Joey, then Angela, then Joe, and said, “Can we talk for a second?” He started to turn away, but stopped when I put my hand on his leg. He looked down at me, “Babe, I gotta find out what’s goin’ on.”
“Will somebody please tell me what the hell’s going on? Angela…why are you wearing Joey’s shirt?” Joe yelled.
We all ignored his plea. “I want to know too. I have just as much right to knowing as you do!” I said to Steven, a little hurt that he wasn’t going to include me. I stood up and followed them into the hall to the left of Monty’s living room. On the way there I saw a few people staggering out the front door, still totally wasted.
The hallway was decorated to look sort of medieval. Small gas lit torches hung from the burgundy painted walls. A tapestry hung on the far end of the long wide hallway. Joe and Angela stood on one side while Joey, Steven and I stood opposite to them. “Okay, we’re all gonna take turns here at telling the truth. Facts about what really happened last night. One person talks at a time, got it?” Steven laid out the ground rules of our little confessional.
