Tick tock tick tock,
Time refused to go faster in my favour. My eyes glued to the clock I was counting down the minutes. Last class of the day and it was Friday which meant freedom from all the unnecessary things in life like school for 2 full days. As if God had finally answered my prayers the bell rang and I shot up from my seat racing towards the door. Like a bullet I ran to my locker grabbing my things as fast as possible trying to avoid all of 'them'. Emilie met me in the parking lot by her car. Pulling open the passenger door I climbed in, the familiar scent of a leather and vanilla mix filling my nostrils making me smile in comfort.
Emilie and I always drove in silence, but it was a comfortable silence as if we were just enjoying being in each others company. As per usual I began to panic on the inside. My dad would be home soon, and my Mom wasn’t finished work until 6.30pm. So this was usually when the torture began. My Mom only worked weekends, while my dad worked weeks so this gave him all the time he needed. Once Emilie pulled into my driveway I tried to mentally prepare myself but it just wasn't working. “Are you okay?” she asked me raising an eyebrow in concern. “Yeah, Yeah I'm fine” I forced a smile before opening the door and climbing out “Thanks for the ride” I said before closing the door and made my way to my front door. I opened it and made my way inside darting upstairs as fast as I could so I could lock myself in there before my dad got home.
Once I got to my room I began rummaging through my drawer looking for my secret key. Once I found it I fumbled it into the key hole shaking and twisted it around only satisfied when I heard the reassuring click. Sighing I made my way across my room opening my bag and grabbing my uneaten apple before settling to start my homework.
I was more afraid then normal today because Cody had gone to stay overnight in his friends house leaving my father and I alone for 3 and a half hours so he could be as brutal as he wanted, and with that advantage he would go to extreme lengths to hurt me. I gulped at the thought before pulling my Math book from my back pack and my pencil case and began to to the algebra homework that was assigned. I was quite good at algebra but not as good as I was at English. I was half way through the mass of algebra questions assigned when I heard the downstairs door open. I knew exactly who it was and the deep husky voice confirmed my believes “Where are you, you little bitch. Get the fuck down here now”. I couldn't move. It was as if my body had frozen in one position. I didn't even want to breath. I heard his heavy footsteps hitting off the wooden stairs as he made his was towards my room. I managed to take a look across my room to the prepared emergency bag I had always kept. It was my 'run-away' bag. It had money and clothes to last at least a week in it.
The shaking of my door handle and the loud bangs on the door made me jump. “OPEN THIS FUCKING DOOR NOW OR ILL KILL YOU STONE DEAD” I could feel the tears whelming in my eyes. I ran towards the bag and threw it on my shoulder and made my way towards the window. He began to shoulder the door hard. My room was situated just over the front porch providing me with a way out. Just as I opened the window and began to climb out the door flung open with force and he barged in. I moved as quick as possible hearing him shouting behind me. I jumped from the roof of the porch and ran for my life with the bag on my shoulder. I heard him yelling after me, I was afraid he was on my heels so I pushed my body faster running as fast as my legs would carry me, I had to get away. I didn't know where in the moment but I would just go where my legs would bring me. I slowed down about a mile away from San Antonio. By now it was about 5pm and the day had darkened slightly. I leant against a tree trying to catch my breath from the run id just undertaken. I began to very slowly walk towards the city. Due to my pace I didn't into the city till 6pm. The streets were beginning to light up with the night lights, it was so pretty with the colourful fall leaves it almost made me forget everything. I trudged along the streets where people were rushing to get home to their families and warm homes where as I, I didn't know where I would go.
Time passed, the sky darkened to night and I was alone in the now cold San Antonio streets which I wouldn't describe as safe from 8pm onwards. I huddled into my cardigan clutching my bag in safety. I kept my eyes on the pavement as the darkness began to blur my vision. I took a turn down onto a street and as I proceeded down it I was met by three very intimidating looking men. Before I had a chance to change direction they had seen me “hey baby, where are you going?” one of them called at me. I took a turn down a dark alley “Baby come back” there voices were close. I knew they were following so I took off into a sprint, running into the darkness unable to see where exactly I was going. I could hear their footsteps close behind me but my legs refused to carry me faster. I shut my eyes tight and pushed but it wasn't until I hit something solid and fell back that I actually opened them. I looked up to see a darkened figure. This was it I was done for, I might as well die now, it's not like anyone would actually care I thought to myself.
The shadow of a hand came in front of me as if an offer to help me up. I tested it and my suspicions were correct. The dark figure pulled me behind them and used themselves as a shield of protection. “Hey man, back off we saw her first” said one of the males. “Afraid she's not yours” the voice of the dark figure said in almost a chuckle. “We don't want to start any trouble dude” another male added. “Back off and there'll be no trouble” the figure almost growled. I found myself clutching his dark hoodie in fear. I heard the men inch closer but then the figure reached in his pocket and pulled something out and suddenly the men retreated. “Whoah man” his hands raised in the air. “Right she's all yours, sluts not worth that kind of trouble”. The figure became slightly tensed “she's not a slut” he growled, I jumped in fright at the action. The men began to run in fright leaving me with this stranger.
“Thank You b-but who are you” my voice cracked slightly in fear, the stranger chuckled before turning towards me. The only light we had was the light of the moon, the moon that illuminated his face. A face that I would've never expected.
