Chapter 22

Recap:

"I cannot release that information unless your blood related to him." She said in a authoritative tone. "I'm his sister!" I hysterically fabricated. She nodded her head before tapping away on her computer. "He's at _________ Hospital." As soon as I heard the information, I ran out the door, never looking back.

MinJi's POV

I burst out of the hospital doors and let the cold air into my suffocating lungs. Frantically and urgently, I searched around for a cab but, to my dismay there was none in sight.

"Excuse me! Excuse me!" I yelled out, running toward a man at a newspaper stand. He looked up at me, questioning my sudden behavior.

"Can you please tell me where _________ Hospital is?"

"Well, let's see. That's about five miles along from here, eight kilometers if you will."

Shoot! Eight kilometers? I hectically turned in a 360 degree circle, trying to find spot a banana yellow car but, no luck. I closed my eyes, thinking of the crazy thing I was about to pull off. I inhaled a deep breathe before starting off in the direction the man pointed, determined to run those five miles on my own.

At first, everything seemed easy but, I spoke too soon. As I dodged the passing pedestrians, my throat dried up like the Mohave Desert and my legs started cramping up but, I still pushed forward. Thin beads of sweat calculated at the top of my forehead, slowly dripping down my red face. The sun beat down on my back like an invisible hand, pushing me forward. Not noticing any familiar landscaping I stopped for a few seconds to ask where my final destination was. After I got directions, I set off again, ignoring the pain aching in my lower right abdomen. The hospital slippers on my feet wore away each time I grazed my foot along the side walk. Soon, I pulled them off and continued my impossible quest, bare foot. By now, my legs were begging me to take a break, my lungs were starving for more air that my thirsty throat wouldn't allow in. I stopped crying but, the dried up tear tracks made my skin feel stretched and made it uncomfortable.

I ran past a mall, three coffee shops (which took all my will power to not stop and order a coffee), two pet stores, fourteen fast food places, and so many restaurants that I lost count. The squeezing pain in my stomach wanted me to slow down and my legs were lead, getting heavier and heavier with each step I took. My brain sent signals to me telling me that I should stop and take a break, but my heart refused. I surged ahead with some new found hope, ignoring the sharp pebbles embedding themselves on my bare feet.

Ahead, the sidewalk disappeared saying that walking wasn't tolerated past this point. Literally gasping for air, I looked at my surroundings. The only way through this traffic was through the traffic itself. Breathing in, I ran ahead like a piercing arrow, shot from a skilled bow and arrow man. A chorus of car beeps met my ears as I zig zagged in between cars. I screeched as a car almost backed up into me but, even that didn't stop me. My phone started ringing but, for the mean time, I ignored it. I finally came to a point where walkers were welcomed warmly. Slowing down a little, I asked once more where the hospital was.

A kind woman answered, "Two more miles sweet heart."

My heart dropped as I heard her words. My arms and legs ached from the strain I was putting them in and my side ache reached across the whole front of my stomach. My feet were aching from being hit against the burning hot pavement without protection. I was sweating like a pig and burning hot, even thought it was only seventy degrees. My phone rang once more and I finally decided to answer.
