Now that we had eaten I wanted to get to know William. As far as I was concerned I deserved answers. "Okay, now let's get down to business. I have a few questions that need answers. If I think you're lying I'll kick you out right now and I'll never let you come back. I'll tie your hands and cover your eyes and let you wonder around until you are found or until you die. I won't speak to you ever again if you live and I ever see you. And if I do see you I'll beat you to a pulp. That's before I would force the answer out of you using my persuasiveness. Got it?" He nodded.
"Good. Lets get started with a simple question. What's your name?"
"William," he answered flatly. Good at least he was cooperating. No comment, no back talk. Hopefully he stays that way.
"Let's try a harder question. Are you hungry William?"
"Not really. No." He was trying to get out of me making eating more. I let that one slide on the fact I couldn't risk any more food to be gone.
It was time for the real questions. "What did you say to the three guys who beat the crap outa you?" Hopefully I would learn something about him and his intentions.
"They were taking food from an eight year old girl. I told them to stop it and leave her alone," He answered with emotion. This guy was stupid. You're only supposed to look out for your self. Idiot.
I was going to tell him what I though about that when he interrupted me by saying, "Those bastards." I paused to see where he was going to go with it. "They just took her food. As she was crying she begged for the food back. She was a thin as a twig. The wind could have snapped her in half." It would have been more merciful if it did, I thought. "They laughed at her and made her try to reach for the food. Then the blond guy pushed her down. Together they laughed at her so much so that they were crying. That just infuriated me. The thing that got me the most was that no one was helping her. Everyone just walked by. Someone needed to do something so I did." He sounded proud of sticking his nose where it didn't belong.
"Much help you were." I mumbled under my breath. This guy was worse than a simpleton. The girl would have learned soon enough to hide her food, to defend her self. He deserved to be beat for getting involved.
This kid was different. He's definitely not around here, at least from the street. "How long have you been on the streets?" Something was wrong with the guy.
"Since I was six," he was lying I could tell. His eyes looked straight at me but his Adam's-apple bobbed up and down. He started to play with his fingers too.
I glared at him. "I'll tell you the rules again. Don't screw with me and I won't hurt you. Wanna try again? Let's try again. How long have you been on the street?"
"Midsummer." He stated with out any more detail. Fine with me I just needed to know if he has had enough time to figure out the ropes.
"How well off were you before?" Money always played a part in learning.
"What?"
"How much money did you have?"
"We did well. Why?" I threw my hands up in frustration and turn toward the door. The guy knew nothing about being on the street. It would be like teaching a curious baby what not to touch. He'd be a pain in my side for sure. I'd have to look out for him and make sure he stayed out of trouble. Looking after a sixteen year old would be like looking after a toddler. No, I think I'd rather teach a toddler. It would know more.
I reached the door when he asked. "You not really what you say you are, are you?" I paused a second and put my hand on the doorknob. "You're not what you say you are, are you?" he asked again. I pushed the door open and left for the back of the house. There wasn't any point to get to my spot not with him here.
