Five Years Ago

"Please don't do this!" She yelled as he shoved the last of his belongings into a bag on their bed.

He was hoping to be gone before she got home but it never seemed to work like that.

"Don't try and stop me! The rest of my stuff is already in the car. Just let me go. Don't make it harder than it has to be." He practically growled.

"Make it hard? Is this easy for you?!"

"It would be if you'd stop fighting me!" He lied. He didn't want to leave, he had to.

"Why would I stop fighting? I love you!"

"Yea, so you've said at least ten times in the last five minutes. Just shut up so can get out of here!" He said zipping the bag shut.

"Don't you love me?" She whispered.

"You know the answer to that." He replied throwing the bag over his shoulder.

"Then w-why do you keep coming back only to leave again?"

"Because you let me." He said coolly, making his way through the apartment.

He couldn't believe the words he had just said. Why did he say that. He didn't mean it, he knew he left to protect her. He thought that all he would do is cause her pain. He thought he would never be good enough.

She stopped following him, tears forming  in her eyes.

"Not this time. I can't go through this again, I just can't. It hurts to much. If you walk out that door don't come back."

He paused for a moment in the living room out of her sight and took a deep breath. All that was left for her to hear was the sound of a key being placed on a table and subtle click of the door sliding back into place as he walked away from the one thing that could save him.

She stood frozen hoping to hear the door open again, for him to wrap his arms around her and tell her he didn't mean any of it, that he wasn't leaving her. After what seemed like an eternity she fell against the wall and slid down to the floor, tears streaming down her face.

It was days before she could do anything more than sleep and cry herself to sleep.
She couldn't keep any food down. The color had left her cheeks and she didn't recognized the skeleton starring back at her in the bathroom mirror.

To be exact it was ten days. On the tenth day after he left she promised herself that she would never let him back into her life, that no man would ever have such a deep hold on her. She would be completely independent, relying on no one else but herself.

Present Day

"Sandy I need you to get those manuscripts on my desk by five p.m. Tomorrow! They should've been done already!"

"Sorry!"

"I don't want to hear I'm sorry I want to see the work done!"

She let out an exasperated sigh as she sat at her desk looking out over the city, trying to ignore the annoyance she felt towards her employee,as the light from the window sparkles off of her diamond clad engagement ring.

Little did she know that her life would be falling apart in a matter of days.
