I walk through the door to our 50 room mansion and chuck my bag on the floor. Finally! The whole school year is over and I can do whatever I want for six weeks.
"Katie! You're home at last!! I miss you so much when you're at school, but it does make it a lot nicer to see you when you get home. Liz at the library is always complaining that Millie's always just playing on her phone and gets grumpy all the time of you try to get her off it,so maybe I'm lucky that you go to boarding school,"
Yes, that's right, I go to boarding school. It's miles away though, so my mum and dad can never visit me at half term and the only time they get to see me is in the holidays.
"Katie! Lisa!" It's the cook shouting to us "Dinners ready! It's taken me all day to cook it, but I like Katie to be happy when she's here because she barely ever is."
My mum and me walk along one of the very long corridors to the dining room. It's been so long since I was here I can barely remember my way around, but I follow mum and eventually we get to the dining room.
I love being rich and having a big house, but sometimes I wish it wasn't so fancy and posh. Everything about our house it huge, the ceilings are extremely high, there are about 15 bedrooms and the stairs are all so wide that you could fit a whole room across them. The dining room table has about forty seats on it, so when it's just my mum and me, it feels very empty.
The servants walk in and bring us our food. It's a massive buffet and we only manage to eat about a quarter of it.
"Mum, when will dad be home?"
My dad works at an office, and he sometimes finishes very late, which I find very annoying, because I barely see him anyway, so when he's at work all day I don't see him much at all.
"He could be home any minute, he finished at 7. "
Just as she says that I hear a car pull up the drive,
"That's him now. Go to the door Katie and welcome him home. He tried to get a day off today, but his boss said there we already 5 people on holiday and he cannot let any more people off work or he will be letting the company down."
I burst out laughing because she said the last bit in an impression of dads boss, who has the strangest voice you will ever hear. He sounds like his voice has been sped up because he speaks so fast and his voice is so high that it is very difficult to understand what he is saying. The only reason I've ever met dads boss is because, when I was about 10, I had to go to work with him because my mum was at work as well, and they didn't want to leave me home alone. When we got there, the receptionist said that I wouldn't be allowed into the office block under any circumstances, so I would have to go and sit with the owner of the company while my dad did his work. So I went into his office and had to help him by doing little jobs for him (like writing things down and passing him pens and paper) which was very hard considering I couldn't understand anything he was saying. That was one on the most horrible days of my life because even though his voice is so funny, dads boss is the opposite of funny. He takes his job so seriously that whenever I was too slow picking something up, he would start screaming at me saying that I would make him lose his job.
So now I run to the front door and open it just as my dad is getting out of the car.
"Katie!! I've missed you so much!" He runs up to me and gives me a huge hug.
"How was work, dad?"
"Just normal. Shall we go inside and have some tea?"
"Ive already eaten, but I'll sit with you while you eat."
So we walk back down the corridor to the dining room, where mum is sitting, playing on her phone.
"Wow this looks amazing! You guys have barely eaten anything!"
"Well, it looks like that, but I'm stuffed!" I say sitting down at the table.
"So how was work?"
"Well the most funny thing happened to me today at work. I went to a cafe for lunch, I was only in there for about an hour, but when I got back, Tim said that the boss wanted to see me! So I........"
I get out my phone and start playing a game now; dads stories always go on for waaaaay to long. Once, he spent a whole hour saying about when a bird flew through a window and landed on the desk. So this one will probably go on for even longer.
"And eventually we worked out that it was Kelly who knocked the computer off!"
I was right. I look at the clock on the wall, and it says that it has been and hour and a half since dad started telling his story. I get up from the table.
"I'm going to bed now. Goodnight!"
Dad looks confused,
"Really? But I only just got home!"
"Dad, look at the clock."
He turns around.
"Wow, that went quickly! Yes it's quite late, well how did that happen?"
"Dad, you got carried away again, you spent a whole hour telling that story!"
I leave the room and walk upstairs to my bedroom. As soon as I lie down I fall straight asleep.
