I hesitantly walked into the office, hearing the door shut behind me.
"So Jaime, Bessy says you have a degree in art..." David said, studying a sheet of paper in front of him.
"Um yeah, I know that's not exactly what you're looking for but it gives me a great eye for shades and tone, obviously important qualities in the world if makeup!" I joked slightly, but he just sat in complete seriousness.
"You would be working with Kate. She's been our makeup artist for years and has been trained, that wouldn't be too intimidating would it?" He said. Seriously dude. I suddenly didn't like him, or Kate for that matter.
"No, I'm sure I'd be fine." I said bluntly.
"You would mainly be working on Q and Sal. Would you be okay with that?" He asked. This guy was talking to me as if I was just out of diapers.
"To be honest, I've never seen the show. But I'm sure I'm perfectly capable to powder up a couple of guys." I said. Maybe I was being a little too defiant.
"Okay, well if you're free the rest of the day, we could see how you go. If by this evening we think you've done a stand up job, we'll give you the makeup artist position!" David laughed, walking out of the door and gesturing for me to follow him. I was shocked and had expected to be turned down... He was actually considering me! We walked past busy people walking every which way. I saw Bessy and waved, needing to be with someone I knew. She walked beside me as we followed David into the makeup room. The flirt I'd met before and Joe were in there along with two other men. "Right Jaime this is James Murray, Joe Gatto, Sal Vulcano and Brian Quinn; guys this is Jaime Little, she's applied for the makeup artist position," David said. I shyly smiled, intimidated and overwhelmed by it all. A stunning woman with golden locks and flawless makeup looked at me, unimpressed.
"I'm Kate," she said. Oh fuck. She held out her perfectly manicured hand and I shook it firmly. Bessy was called into the other room so I had to fend for myself. Kate pressed a black bag towards my chest and walked over to the guys. "That's your makeup bag... All the tools you'll need. You know, I'm not trying to be rude..." She started, "but I need to see if you're any good. Wait here," she demanded walking out of the room and leaving me with the four strangers. The one I guessed was James turned to me and placed a hand on my pale arm.
"Don't worry about her," he said, "She's a bitch." I laughed causing one of them to look up from his phone and really look at me. I tried to ignore the fact he was staring before Joe intervened.
"Sal dude, stop staring at her!" Joe laughed. Sal blushed slightly before readjusting his nerdy glasses and turning his attention back to his phone.
"So, are you a fan?" James asked, breaking the slightly awkward silence that had formed.
"Um, don't hate me but I've actually never watched the show!" I winced as they all turned to face me.
"Oh right, have you been a makeup artist before?" He asked again, I felt like all my answers were going to disappoint them.
"No,"I said plunging my face into my hands, "I'm the head set designer at Sasha's theatre down the street... Or at least I was," I said sadly, remembering the job I'd lost.
"Oh my God, as in the theatre with all the art in the background and the moving scenes?" Sal exclaimed, his interest suddenly perking.
"Um yeah, I painted and designed that." I said shyly.
"Then what the fuck are you doing here?" Sal asked.
"Um, I got fired. My boss was a real dick and um yeah... There isn't much work for artists these days!" Before anyone could say anymore, Kate walked in with her bag of makeup.
"Right, shall we start on Sal?" Kate said, spinning his chair to face me. I stuttered before answering,
"Um, okay," Kate sat in the chair opposite inspecting my every move.
"Kate, you wanna grab a bite with us?" Brian said, obviously trying to distract Kate from my interrogation.
"No, I'm fine," she said simply, "but you guys should stay, after all she's the one who could be doing your makeup in the future!" Kate said bitchily. Defeated, the three men sat behind her, obviously feeling sorry for me. I tried to ignore Kate but was mostly intimated by Sal, who was sat in front of me. My heart pounding in my chest, I began to apply the makeup.Hi Guys : Oh my God, I never knew applying makeup could be so tense!
