Chapter 40
Jaycie's pov:
Jake leads us down a long hallway and up a flight of stairs. There's a turn on the stairs and Jake abruptly stops.
"Wh-" I begin to say but Jake pushes his finger against my lips to silence me.
"H-" Harry begins to say something but Jake glares at him. Harry gets the message and shuts up.
"There's security from this point on," he whispers to us.
"What time is it?" He asks Harry.
"Quarter to 2," Harry says.
Jake sighs. "The guards will be switching in 10 minutes. That's our only chance to get out of here."
My heart feels like its in my throat and I feel like gun press against my stomach as we sit down and try to be as silent as possible. The walls are tight around us. I feel like its closing in on us and I can't breath. My chest rises up and down faster. Harry sits at my side and rubs my side.
"Shh," he says,"it's going to be okay, I promise"
I turn around and pull him into my embrace and don't dare let go.
"Don't leave me," I beg. Tears build in my eyes. The fear of losing him and getting caught here are getting to me. So much can go wrong. Not now. Be strong Jaycie.
"I won't," he says.
"Don't make me go without you," I beg. I don't care if my parents or Kathryn are watching. Not even Jake. All I care about is Harry. We need to get out, but what then. I can't just go on without Harry.
"You have to go," he says. I feel a tear land on my shoulder.
"I can't," I say and feel tears of my own fall.
"Yes you can," he reassures me.
"I can't just leave you here. How can I go on and know that you are here. I can't just pretend that none of this ever happened. I can't pretend I don love you and move on. I need you," I say.
"I love you," Harry says in a tone that makes me feel like he's saying goodbye.
I hold onto him tighter. I feel a hand on my knee and I look up. It's me dad.
"Harry?" He says. Harry looks at my father still with tears in his eyes.
"You need to go with us. What good will it do if you stay here?" My dad asks.
"Sir, if I go... Jaycie will never be safe. Des.. He's..," Harry turns a bit nervous to say the next part,"he's my father. He will do whatever it takes to keep me here and if I go Jaycie will be in danger. That's why all of you are here. Because when he found out I fell in love with Jaycie... He did this to get to me. He'll never stop. It's better this way. I can handle it."
My dad looks at Harry wide eyed.
"He's your father?" My dad asks.
"Regrettably, yes."
"But.. But," my dad says,"we can figure something out. There must be a way for all of us to get out."
"I'm sorry sir. There isn't."
"But," my dad begins but then stays quiet.
"I can hear them shifting," Jake says,"we have to go now."
We all stand up and follow Jake. The lump in my throat makes it even harder for me to breath as we keep moving. He opens a door at the top of the stairs and walks out.
"Quickly," he says.
We follow behind and quickly step into a dark hallway.
"We're still underground. There's only one floor above and we still have 2 levels to go through."
I suck in a breath and Harry takes my hand.
"Hurry," he says,"keep your guns in check. We don't know when we'll run into a guard."
I pull the gun out from my pants and Harry does the same. We look at each other but keep running. He knows I'm nervous and he is too.
"Stop," Jake says.
We all stop and I hold my breath. Jakes breathing is heavy.
"Go, go," he says pushing us into a random room.
I hear a voice say something. I think they were asking who was there. We stand in the small dark room. A rustling noise comes from the bed and we all jump.
"Hey, whose there?" The voice asks. The lamp turns on in the corner and the man jumps up.
"What are you doing? Get out!" He screams.
He opens his drawer quickly searching for something. His gun. Jake rushes to him and hits him on the head with the bottom of his gun causing him to fall to the ground in unconsciousness.
I let out my breath and its heavy and shaky. Jake walks back over to us and places his hand on my cheek.
"You okay," he asks. His hand is pushed away from my face by Harry and I just nod my head. He turns away with a pained look on his face and presses his ear to the door.
"He's gone," he says opening the door again. We step back into the hall and rush away. We run for a while until Jake stops and pushes us back. I peer my head from the corner and see two guards holding guns standing in front of a double door.
"Harry," Jake says,"you and I have to go and act like nothing's wrong. We need to get rid of them."
Harry just nods and lets go of my hand. I feel suddenly very vulnerable as he walks with Jake. I listen carefully to what they say.
"Des says he needs to speak with you. Both of you," Jake says.
"Go now," Harry demands.
"Why should we listen to you," one of them says. My heart races. What is he going to say?
"Because,"Harry starts,"pretty soon you will have to listen to me. And I just told you, my *father* wants to see you."
I hear a loud gulp.
"Yes, sir," they say and I hear their boots clank of the floor leaving to door.
They come back around the corner.
"Lets go," Harry says grabbing my hand and pulling me towards the door. He pushes it open with both hands and we run forward. We reach another flight of stairs.
"Hurry," Jake says.
Harry gives him a look telling him that he knows and when he turns around he bumps into someone.
"Well, what do we have here?" A voice says. I look up and panic overtakes me.
"Des," Harry says nervously.
My breath catches in my throat and I feel like I could faint at any second. What are we going to do?
