Damsel in Distress

Has anyone here ever heard of a 'dude in distress' or a 'lady in shining armor'?

Why is it, that even today, it's always the female who needs rescuing? Yes, there are many examples of women defending themselves or others from bad guys in literature, cinema and art. We have seen an increase in the number of female protagonists, strong female characters in general, and even kick-ass female antagonists.

But still today, in modern culture, the limelight is hogged by guys swooping in to save the day.

Let's take the instance of our dear cinema. The number of times I have seen situations where the lead girl is being harassed by a bunch of guys, and then the lead guy enters the scene and shows the misbehaving idiots their place, is countless.

There are so less times when a female characters stands her ground, looks her assaulter in the eye, kicks his ass, and does not depend on her guy to save her.

Why is that so?

Why can't we empower our female characters more?

Why can't we have them defend themselves?

Even more than that, why can't we have our female characters save the males for a change?

I'm not saying that their should only be girls saving guys. I'm saying that there should be a balance. The probability of either the guy or the girl saving the day should be equal.

In fact, who would save the day shouldn't even depend on gender.

The perception that girls are the clumsier, weaker, and dumber of the two genders needs to desperately change. Mind-sets are changing around the globe, I agree. But they need to improve more.

And that starts from us.

I know most of the people who started reading this probably left it in the start thinking this was another feminist rant. But if you are still reading, it means you care. You do think that there needs to be equality.

So do the little things you can to help empower women. All the little things you do are like drops in an ocean. Insignificant on their own, but like a tsunami together.

And this tsunami wave is needed to bring men-women equality.

No more damsels in distress.
