loving you was the most exquisite form of self-destruction.

"Where is she?" Sonny's father's rushed into the emergency room after getting a phone call about their adopted daughter being hit by a car.

They were escorted to her room where Sonny laid, unconscious after her emergency surgery from an open fracture to her broken leg. Josh had been sitting next to her, shaking his leg, trying to relieve his guilt of pressuring her into traffic.

Later that day, after Sonny had woken up, police spoke to her.

"Which one is the father?" The detective asked her parents.

"Both," one sarcastically laughed. "We are her fathers."

"Dad." Sonny scolded him weakly.

"We're at a bit of a loss as to what happened," the man began. "We have security camera footage, but the people who hit you are very angry. They said that you purposely jumped in front of the car."

"I was just running across the street without paying attention." Sonny lied.

"Are you sure?" The man pressed. "We have witnesses that tell us that him," he pointed to Josh. "Was pressuring you."

"He didn't." Sonny knew her sentence was not correct, but she was so shaken up.

"So he wasn't pressuring you?"

Sonny looked at Josh for a few seconds with tears in her eyes. He was giving her a pleading look, not wanting her to tell them what actually happened.

"Sonny?" Her father grabbed her hand.

"He didn't," Sonny shook her head. "It was my fault. I was being stupid. I'm fully responsible for this."

"Due to your statement, the family wants to sue for the damages."

"Oh, come on," Josh elbowed Sonny. "Take the stick out of your butt."

"Why?" Sonny shrugged. "So that we can get arrested again?"

"It's called having fun and living life." Josh replied.

"I'm fine with.. living life. I'm just not fine with it when it's illegal." Sonny told him.

"You're a party pooper." Josh said.

"And you're a convicted felon." Sonny shot back.

Josh stated at her for a few seconds before cracking a smile. "Touché."

"It's wasn't supposed to be a compliment." Sonny pointed out.

"I know," Josh said. "It's just fun to see how irritated you get sometimes."

"Gag me with a spoon." Sonny sassed.

"I would rather gag you with something else, but whatever."

"Shut up." Sonny reached across the console and lightly slapped Josh on the chest.

"Kinky." Josh whispered.

"You really have no filter, do you?" Sonny pointed out.

"But you already knew that," Josh replied. "Sweetheart."

Sonny only sighed in response.

"I know you hate me now," Josh said. "But you can't deny that you loved me at one point."

"I'm trying to drive," Sonny said. "And I'm tired. You're distracting me."

"Take a break." Josh said.

"No," Sonny shook her head. "I wanna get there as soon as possible so that I can be out of the car with you."

"You're really insensitive," Josh put his hand on his chest mockingly. "I'm so hurt."

"I don't let assholes get to me." Sonny replied.

"Take a break." Josh repeated.

"I already said no."

Out of nowhere, Josh jerked the wheel to the right, swerving her to the side of the back road.

Sonny slammed on the breaks, causing both her and Josh to lurch forward.

"What the hell is wrong with you?!" Sonny yelled after recovering.

Josh simply held in his laughter.

"It's not funny!" She shouted before getting out of the driver's seat and slamming the door.

Josh got out of his seat with a laugh, meeting Sonny in the grass. "It's fine."

"It's not!" Sonny argued. "You could've killed us!"

"But we're not dead." Josh said so calmly that it was phasing Sonny.

"I'm not gonna let your self-destructive behavior and your fucking death complex ruin my future."

"I'd hardly call it a death complex." Josh said a smirk.

"Unlike you," Sonny started. "I have a future. I got into an almost Ivy League school and I'm going on a full ride. You?" Sonny scoffed. "You hardly graduated. I'll be damned if I let you and your stupid jokes get in the way of life. The one I want to live without you."

Sonny tried to push past him, but he grabbed her wrist and brought her closer.

"Calm down." Josh told her.

"Let go of me!" Sonny struggled to pull away, but Josh only grabbed a hold of her other wrist and squeezed tighter.

"I said calm down." Josh gave her a stern look.

Sonny's breath hitched as she felt the fear pulsing through her body.

As Josh saw Sonny turn pale, he immediately let go and stepped away.

Sonny looked down and began picking at nails, trying not to show that she had gotten upset.

"Sonny-" Josh tried to fix what he had done, but Sonny was not having it.

"No, um," Sonny sniffled. "Y-You can drive like you wanted to."

Josh followed Sonny to the back of her old van where she opened the door and sat on the edge.

"Sonny.." Josh tried to grab her hand, but she flinched away.

"Can we just go now?" Sonny was careful with her words, not wanting to upset Josh.

"I'm sorry." Josh told her.

"It's fine," Sonny shook her head. "I just um.. I don't wanna go through this again."

After Josh made sure Sonny was situated ( the bed of her van doubled a type of bed, so he made sure she had her blankets ), he got into the driver's seat. Sonny did not like highways, so she drove on back roads, and Josh decided he would do just that for her.

As he drove, he could not help but to get distracted by the quiet sobs he heard from the behind him.

Eventually, they turned into the soft snores that he would often tease his ex-girlfriend about. He remembered all of the times that he made sure to stay awake long enough for her to fall asleep just so that he could hear them. Sonny was Josh's second chance, and he ruined it.

Josh had a lot of love for Sonny, even though his actions said otherwise.
