As a year goes by within that year the two children learn to fish, cook, make fire, build, hunt, clean, make clothes, and how to swim. They learned what they can and cannot eat. They would also have a fun party each night of Patty telling them scary stories or singing, Patty found a barrel of rum one day and began to drink. Chris and Clary thought he was the most funniest drunk ever.

They would always dress him up into women's clothing that would find upon the shore while he slept. Patty was like a father to them. That night things would change....

That day Patty and Chris were looking for a good place to find firewood. They have never traveled this far. Chris unintentionally separated from Patty. That's because he was distracted by sounds of drums and chants, Chris peeked through the bushes and saw a big group of Indians chanting, dancing, and sacrificing... a man. Out of no where Patty grabbed Chris, "Christopher we need to leave now!" . Patty was whispering and yelling. Chris ran as far as he could. Patty soon catched up to him . "Chris promise you will never go to this part of the island again!" "But Patty!" "No buts this is the law no going over there ever again." Patty quickly grabbed the firewood he found and hurried back to the shelter.

That night they sat around the fire while Patty put on a skirt and a women's hat and danced and singed around the fire. The children were laughing and enjoying everything they ate and got up and danced with him. After awhile they got tired and sat down on the beachy sand.

"Patty?" Clary said so quietly that only Patty heard very so slightly. "Yes, my darling?" "Do you think we will ever go back home?" Patty didn't know what to say.

He can't lie to her and get her hopes up, but he couldn't bring himself to tell her the truth either. He went to say something to her but she was already asleep lying right next to Christopher. Patty picked them both up and put him back in the hut that they built. Patty decided to take a swim to the little island just west of their own. Patty swam into the night and not return back to the island.

Chris woke up early and bright and started making breakfast with some bird eggs he had found in a tree. After breakfast was made, Chris went to get everyone up for breakfast, when he realized Patty was missing.

Chris didn't freak out much because Patty was like this every time he drank. Chris went over the trunk that they saved from the ship wreck, and pulled out a pocket sized telescope. He started to look out into the ocean like he always does every morning. Still there was no ships, or even life boats out. Chris put down the scope and proceeded to wake up Clary. "Clarissa wake up its time for breakfast." He gently was shaking her shoulder. She mumbled something under her breath but it incoherent. She then slowly sat up and opened her eyes. "Where's Patty?" "Probably some where sleeping." Chris chuckled and then got up and went looking for him. After hours of looking in his normal places of sleeping, Patty was no where to be found. Chris then started panicking. Where could Patty be?

Chris picked up his telescope and began looking for him in the water. Or on the island where Chris couldn't climb to or reach. Still no sign of Patty. Chris then started looking out to the island across the way. After a few minutes looking he finally found Patty laying on the shore sleeping peacefully. Chris felt relieved as he alerted Clary that Patty was on the other island. They immediately went and jumped into the boat. Started their way to Patty.

They get to the island with joy to find Patty and bring him home. "Patty!" They both shouted as they ran toward him. They reach him and his back was facing towards them. "Patty get up so we can go home." Clary said while poking him with a stick that she found. They both giggled. Then Chris turned him over. That's when they realized, Patty, their mentor and friend, was dead. Chris gasped in shock and moved back away him, Clary then collapsed, she was knocked out cold.
