In Smiley, a country in Europe that almost no one knows about, two girls become the heroes of the countrie's citizens all of a sudden.
You're probably thinking "Everyone must be super happy in Smiley!" Well that's not the case. Everyone in this tiny country is poor, or if you want me to be more positive, everyone is in poverty! Almost no one smiles and the funny thing is all the streets are named after happy things.
Smiley is super small. It's the size of two average towns in the U. S. A. So this is why nobody knows about this place. There's only one grocery store, but it's actually the only sort of nice looking place in Smiley. However, there's no gas station because no one drives cars. Going through this place is like going back in time. The people only ride bikes and horses. If you do see a car it's because it's a person passing through to get to Germany or to get to the English Channel to get to England.
Anyways, the two girls considered "heroes" in this book are Mellisa and Brooke. They met by being neighbors but their parents hated each other so Brooke moved five houses down on the same street named Sunny St. To see each other Mellisa says she going to the rundown park to read, (The rundown park only has a swing and a black slide that has a crack running through it. No one is ever here) but she was really sneaking onto the roof to hang out with Brooke. Mellisa and Brooke were the smartest kids around. Brooke had her life already planned. She wanted to get out of Smiley and go to London to become a brain surgeon. Mellisa wanted to stay in Smiley but she wanted to fix it. She wanted to build a college, cars and gas stations, and an actual park. They were both 12 and both had the same birthday of September 7. They talked about how different Smiley was to places like France, Germany, Spain, The U.K, etc. However, the one thing they talked about all the time was the government of Smiley.
