"Adrienne hurry up!" My sister hollered as she slammed the front door closed.
" Coming!" I replied gathering my belongings and jamming them into my neon blue backpack. Okay... I had our DVD's, our 'ideas' notebook, my MP3 player with headphones, Cheetos, pop, pens and some pencil crayons. I guess that was everything. I raced down the stairs my auburn hair floating behind me. As I opened the front door I was greeted by my sister who was holding my blue weaved bracelet in her hand. The small hanging silver key shone brightly in the sunlight. I smiled bashfully.
"You almost forgot your ticket inside, sis. What would you do without me?" She smiled smugly.
"Thank you so much, I knew that I was forgetting something..." I said.
"Ya, ya. We really need to go or we will be late...again." She said as she hopped on her bright yellow bike. I climbed onto the seat of my royal blue bike parked beside her. I grabbed my helmet and put it on my head.
"Aren't you wearing a helmet Lani?" I asked.
"No, those are for babies not 10 year old girls." She laughed as she zoomed down the road of our subdivision. I followed her pedaling quickly trying to catch up. "Look, Adrienne I am riding with no hands!" She bragged. I smiled attempting to do the same. That resulted in approximately two seconds of success (if wobbling counts) before I grasped my handle bars catching my fall. I heard loud laughter coming from behind me.
"You are as smooth as water Addy!" The laughing voice said.
"Always!" I replied to the familiar voice laughing to myself. The figure came beside me. It was my best friend Pele. Her bright red hair shone in the sun, blowing in the wind as she rode alongside me.
"Lani!" She hollered smiling.
"Yes Pele!" Lani replied whipping her head around.
"Do you want to race?" Pele suggested in pleading tone.
"Like I would turn down a race?" Lani shouted jokingly.
I watched as they both geared up for the race. Pele caught up to where Lani was and looked at me.
" Addy you can race too, if you want... However, I don't think it is a good idea... You'd probably hurt yourself." She said shrugging her shoulders.
"Okay. I'll meet you guys there." I replied softly. I knew the path well enough by now anyway, so it didn't really matter if I was with someone or not. We all turned right zooming down the dirt path to the forest. Lani and Pele were already far ahead of me. I tried to pedal faster but it was no use. With my short legs and my one gear bike I had a huge disadvantage. But I didn't mind. The wind greeted my sweaty face refreshing me immensely. I took in all my surroundings. I was approaching a small wooden bridge going over top a small stream that curved into the forest. Beside the stream were tall grasses with small yellow butterflies peeking out before disappearing back into the grasses cover. It was stunning. I smiled to myself as I saw a bunny hop out too. Eventually, I made it into the forest the trees a canopy providing shade above my overheated body. I turned left and then scanned the forest for my destination. Then, I saw it along with Lani, Pele, Peter and Mitch . Peter and Mitch were my good friends. Peter was olive skinned with brown eyes and shaggy blond hair and Mitch had pale skin had jet black hair and glasses over his green eyes.
" Hey, Adrienne!" Peter called waving.
"Hey!" I responded waving back nearly falling off my bike. I heard a chorus of laughs and Mitch smiled at me.
"It's about time you made it here, Addy. We nearly went searching for you, to check that you didn't fall into the river." Pele said. I guess I had been moving quite slowly or they had been moving dangerously quick. I was thinking the latter. I mean, they were racing after all. Oh who won that race anyways?
"I won Adrienne, and by quite a bit too!" Lani said reading my mind. That happened a lot it must just be a twin thing.
"She cheated though and went off the path. " Pele whined as she walked towards me as I parked my bike with all the others.
"Ya she went off the path only for the few seconds it took to pass you. You should have seen your twin Adrienne, she was faster than the wind!" Peter rambled as he approached Pele and patted her on the shoulder. "Its okay though, I understand that you are a poor loser and it upsets you when you do not win." Peter said with a sympathetic look on his face.
"Be quiet, Peter. For the record it is Addy not Adrienne." She huffed as she quickly glanced at me and stormed away. Everyone's eyes were on me. I shrugged my shoulders, not really sure how I felt about the whole situation and name thing.
"Let's go." Pele said as she headed towards the place we had made this long trek for.
"Someone is fiery. Sis we better go ." Lani laughed grabbing my arm following Pele half running half walking. Peter and Mitch trailed behind us talking and laughing.
We went through the forest the fallen branches cracked underneath us as we passed over them. After several minutes we came to a stop. There standing in the opening in the forest was our clubhouse. It was an old building with vertical wood boards attached to a rusty metal roof. At the top of the wooden boards was a large window in the shape of a cross. Where the perpendicular lines were the same length and both adorned with circles on the end. The steel door was repaired by Mitch because the old one that was there before had broke. He installed a maximum security system, where we all needed to be at the clubhouse with our bracelets in order to open the door.
"Ok guys, you all know the drill." Pele said as she went to the door taking off her red bracelet and putting the small key in its appropriate keyhole. We all one by one did the same with our own keys on our different colour bracelets. As the last key was put in the hole the door opened. Inside it was just as it was when we previously were there. Which honestly was yesterday. Greeting us was a welcome sign signed with all our signatures. On the back we made a pledge to our friendship. The room had old hardwood floors and the walls were covered with homemade drawings and writings created over the years. We all took our spots at the circular tables and took out our backpacks. I pulled out the bag of Cheetos and pop to which everyone engulfed within a matter of minutes. Along with this we jotted down notes on how we could improve this clubhouse. Mitch suggested that we installed plumbing that connected to the river that ran within 100 metres of the clubhouse. He drew a complex diagram in his
notebook and we all agreed to construct it. Laughter and jokes echoed off the walls. It was a lot of fun until we all had to get home before sunset and bid our goodbyes. We did this everyday. Through the rain, snow, through the windy days, and the super hot or cold ones. Nothing could stop us from going to our sacred place. We were invincible there, it gave us purpose and something to look forward to. The friendship between us was unbreakable. Powerful. Ours.
Until it all changed.
