Chapter 7: Rise of the New Generation
He saw her rush out of the car, and he climbed up to the driver seat, nearly getting his shoe caught on the gearshift. He laughed, the driver’s seat of this very car feeling so natural. But now he wasn’t hiding in the dark, like he had done a number of times before, hoping he’d get back before they woke up. And this time it wasn’t as a rebel; it was as a protector, for Simon, and Heather. And he was truly grateful that he enjoyed viewing speed limits as only suggestions. He shifted the car into drive, held his foot on the break, as he turned the car around so it was facing the other way. He kept an eye on the beasts in the rear view mirror and he saw his Mom, glowing with a white light, striking them down, one after another. A kick, a punch, and two more were down.
“Wow, she’s so cool,” Heather said as she watched the chaos unfold. It was one thing to see the light in her hand, but something else entirely to see how strong she was. Two of them ambushed her from behind, but with a spinning kick she sent them flying to the ground, their wings no longer moving.
“Will she be okay though?” Simon asked, as he faced the back of the car, trying to get a good picture of the battle.
“She will be,” Jason said, not wanting to think that he could be wrong. She knew what was going on, she knew how to fight these things. And she was proving just how strong she was. He watched with pride as another three Xyscons fell without even leaving a scratch on her.
“Oh no!” Simon said, his eyes wide with terror. Jason looked back for a moment, and knew what that had to mean. Another vision. And a lump formed in his throat at the thought of how bad it must be. “There are more coming, hundreds of them.”
Jason let up on the break just a bit and the car began rolling forward. He pulled his eyes from the battle behind him, not wanting to think about what he was doing.
“They’re going to kill her,” Simon said, trying to bury his head in his hands to get rid of the images, though it was to no avail. Closing his eyes only made it worse, making it so there was no contrast between the reality in front of him and the images from beyond.
Jason gripped the wheel tighter, knowing what he had to do. He was given one job; protect his siblings. And that wasn’t something he took lightly. If Simon was right, and he knew he was, Jason had to leave now. But looking back, he knew something else. That would be leaving his Mom to die. And maybe it was foolish, to put everyone in danger to stay with her, but he had to do it. It was the right thing to do.
“How long?”
“Less than five minutes.”
“She’s going to kill me for this,” Jason whispered to himself as he turned the car back around. And just as he thought, Dani started yelling at him to go away.
“Didn’t she say to get away from here?” Heather asked.
“Yeah, but when do I listen to her anyway.”
And with that, he put the car in park, throwing his seat belt off, and rushed to join his mom, only then realizing he had no idea at all what he was going to do. Well, that didn’t stop him before, and he sure wasn’t going to let that stop him now.
“He’s going to need our help,” Simon said.
“But how?”
“Trust me.”
Heather nodded, only hoping that her brother’s insight wouldn’t end up getting them all killed. Still, he knew what was going on, or at least something about the future, and hadn’t been wrong yet. “You better not let me down.”
