Chapter 29: The Needs of the Many
Jason ran toward his brother, finally latching onto him as he tried shaking him awake, but it was no good. He was dead to the world, lost in a land of dreams for all Jason could tell. But he still shook him, shouted his name, hoping for some response, instead of just a limp head falling back down when he let go. He felt the bolts of magic coming out from Simon, the power in them stinging him, but Jason wouldn’t let that keep him away. The pain was bearable, especially in a time like this.
After finding that waking Simon wouldn’t be enough, he looked to the chains. They seemed to be made of a really old metal, rust covered them, and they look as if they could simply be pulled apart. However, as he tried breaking them, he noticed they were surprisingly resistant, but as Jason concentrated, putting as much physical effort as he could into ripping them apart, he noticed that his light was reacting to something, and could only guess that these were magic infused chains, which explained their high durability.
Not content to let that stop him though, he raised his hand in the air, building his light and launching a karate chop at the chains. With the light empowering him, he felt the chain shatter beneath him. Simon falling to the ground made the other chains fade as well.
Though before Jason could celebrate, the room began shaking more, and a giant wave of black energy shot out of Simon, fusing with the blue magic that had slowly been drained out of Ashley. When these two combined together, they began spinning, slowly at first, the two colors blending, and Jason could feel the goose bumps rise along his arms, the sheer power from whatever this was over taking him.
He latched onto Simon’s body, pulled him close, and then started running, hoping he could get out of there before whatever thing that was exploded, or opened, or any of a number of things that would only end badly for them.
“Jason,” Simon said, barely stirring, still needing to be dragged as his feet wouldn’t respond.
“You’re going to be okay buddy,” Jason said, running as fast as he could, but with the extra weight holding him back, that was little more than a walk. Still, Simon was alive, whatever portal thing they were opening would have to wait, and in the light of this, Jason smiled, even seeing the battles rage in front of him.
“You have to go back for Ashley,” Simon said, his voice just a bit stronger this time, as he began to move one foot in front of the other along with Jason.
“Don’t bother,” Ashley said, several small explosions following her response as she walked unharmed from the portal, the shackles still on her wrists, though the chains were no where to be seen.
Jason couldn’t help but rejoice, but that was short lived as he saw Heather fall pray to several Xyscons and Justin and Brandon both forced to retreat from Zack’s attacks up ahead of him. He was so close now, he just had to help finish these guys off then they were safe for good.
“Ash, can you watch Simon,” he said, slowly bringing Simon off of his shoulder and resting him against the wall. If this was any other time, he would have made sure that Simon was okay himself, but with the battle raging, he knew he couldn’t be that selfish. This was the time to fight, and he wouldn’t shirk that challenge.
“Jason, we can’t.” With a weary lift of his hand, Simon pointed to the portal, where dozens of Nightwings began emerging.
“I was too late,” Jason said, subconsciously leaning against the wall, seeing that there might not be a way to win now.
…
As Zack dodged Brandon’s sword, Justin used his control of the air to propel him forward, a blast of light blinding Zack before Brandon could get to his back. Between the two of them, Zack couldn’t stop all the attacks. Brandon’s speed, even with his clumsy sword work, made it dangerous to take his eyes of him while Justin could end this with a well-placed attack. Zack flew through the air, trying to get some distance between them, but as he did so, Justin sent a gust of wind at him, blowing him into the wall. Justin kept up the wind, holding him there; he then followed with a fireball, accelerated by the wind, and several beams of light. He fired it at Zack, the attack landing dead-on, and the Nightwing fell to the ground.
