Chapter 10: Brothers of Darkness and Light
Memory.
Fundamental to life, perhaps even to who one is.
But for him, it was gone, faded away.
The images he saw, colors, emotions, they didn’t move him. He just watched, as they came, one after another.
There was the beginning. From the days forgotten. Mountains and oceans roared and battle over the land. Darkness and light raged through the earth. Chaos reigned surprise in those days.
But then, stilled by the hands of the Creator, the earth quieted. Their raging torment subdued, and through the blissful peace, life emerged. The world shook with each change, of the sun and the moon and the stars.
Though this was only the start of something new. The first beings were simply there, to grow and to live. And they did, their breaths taking in the heat of the sun and the rain of the clouds. In that day all was peaceful, all was normal.
In the next day life grew into something new. No longer were the living stationary and unthinking. These new beings, walked, and talked, and breathed. The water, the sky, the land, these creatures covered it all. Each creature unique, and each good.
Then another day passed, and a creature not unlike the ones before took shape. But these were different. Beyond thinking, these could feel. Beyond existing, these lived. None before it knew what they were. While the others seemed to have life, these were truly alive, endowed with the breath of a soul, they ruled over the lesser lives. This world was indeed very good.
But among good there is evil.
And perfection has a way of fading away.
As the mortal man fell to the serpents lie, the evil within took heart. A power of darkness, that exists in man flowering into the chaos of a world buried within. He sees the realm of evil, one where the temptation lies. Each and every moment, the power took hold, for its dark master, to one day behold.
Life went on in this fallen land, children born and grew, the earth theirs to subdue. But through it all, in the unseen land, the shadows of old, carried within.
He saw it all, as the ages went by, and of the souls, to delve deep within. One day not so long after the great destruction swept the land, a young man journeyed within. He felt the presence there, like none felt before. He touched it, the darkness that called to him. He was transformed in an instant, like the flash of a new dawn across the midnight sky. And upon feeling the power around him, he knew what this meant. The power that it held within took him in an instant.
And so was born, the first Nightwing.
He saw the war, the corruption that took hold. How they banished the good, ruled by evil. Even the righteous among them were driven out, till one remained. A family pure and noble, righteous amongst the danger. But through the Nightwings might, they messengers would not yield. A mighty destruction came upon them, destroying the land they loved.
The power of the darkness continued, taking hold of the land of old, as it descended into a new world. One who’s creator fled from the light. Hopeless and depraved, the lord of this realm awaited the day, his warriors preparing for the strike against the light.
…
Simon opened his eyes, not remember that he was sleeping, only the images of the world taking him along. “Whoa,” he said, nothing making sense. Only knowing what he saw, unable to understand, and perhaps unwilling too as well. But he saw them, their wings, their power, and their evil. He didn’t know who they were, but from within his soul, he knew what they were. The terror he spoke of not long ago, the Nightwings.
