Chapter 30: Call of the Knight
Jason saw his brother fade into the nothing as more Nightwings fully emerged, the site of their towering figures, and awe inspiring wings normally telling him that this was foolish, that there was no way he could win; but he never was one to listen to common sense like that. With all his power he ran at them, his light blinding any fear or doubt he had left. If Simon was willing to sacrifice everything like this, he had no reason not to do the same, and he knew his burden wasn’t nearly the same Simon was facing. He slammed his fist into one of the Nightwings before leaping back, seeing a magic sword slice at him as the Nightwings continued to pour through the portal. He knew he was in for one heck of a fight.
“Take that,” Ashley said, sending a blast of destructive energy at the Nightwings, causing the group to leap back, giving Jason the room he needed to fight. One he could handle, maybe two, but he’d lost track of how many Nightwings were flying in front of him.
“They’re only humans,” Zack yelled, deflecting one of Brandon’s attacks as he did so, moving back toward his comrades. “Break through them, and the earth will soon fall!” Zack leapt through the air, getting closer to the army of Nightwings pouring into this realm.
However, taking advantage of this momentary distraction of Zack focusing on his comrades, Brandon leapt forward going as fast as he could. Brandon deflected Zack’s weapon away, and before his foe could counter, landed a stab right in the Nightwing’s stomach. Zack looked down at him shock and terror across his face. He tried to force Brandon away, but before he could, Brandon pulled his weapon out, tearing across flesh and bone as if they were one, before he jumped back to dodge the attack. Despite a few scratches of his own, Brandon had made it through the battle mostly unharmed, and with Zack now weakened, he knew it was the time to finish him off. He charged forward, his speed too much for Zack to follow and in an instant, the blade went through Zack’s skull. Brandon smiled, feeling weird that he’d be happy about killing his uncle, but knew that this would be an end to Zack’s evil, that no longer would his family be in danger of this Nightwing ever again.
Though looking at the Nightwings that had just come into the battle, he knew the fight wasn’t over yet. He saw Jason, Ashley and Heather fighting, but knew that one Simon not being there meant something was horrible wrong. “Where’s Simon?”
“He went into the portal,” Jason said, narrowly dodging one of the Nightwings attacks. “He said he could destroy the entire realm from within it, saying that would stop the Nightwings forever.”
The fact that the war that had stolen so much from him could soon end filled him with joy.
“He’s sacrificing everything for us,” Jason said fighting back a few tears as he punched a Nightwing in the face.
Of course, the fact that it would mean losing another family member filled him with dread. Brandon knew this was war, the young and innocent not spared being asked to make the ultimate sacrifice. He fought so that others would not have to, and kept pushing forward against the masses of Nightwings.
Jason fired at the Nightwings finally able to put enough distance as to not have to worry about sharp objects constantly being swung at him. He guessed they were still weakened, none of them nearly as strong as the others he fought, but their numbers took their tool. Ashley joined him as much as she could, though she quickly found out how exhausted she was, which didn’t surprise her much due to her power being siphoned out when the portal was opened. Even if that weren’t the case, completely annihilating things took a tremendous deal of power.
Heather stood beside her family, flinging a sword that had been discarded at one of the Nightwings, though it was quickly knocked away before she started looked for any other objects she could use as weapons. Trey joined the fray too, quickly appearing beside a Nightwing, and launching a series of quick punches and kicks forcing that one back before joining his family. He could feel the weariness take him as well; he couldn’t keep fighting at this speed for much longer, and only hoped that was all that they needed. It seemed like for every Nightwing they defeated two more took their place, and while
