I was walking alone by the road until I started to recognize a manly figure.
"It could be someone." I thought to myself.
He seemed to be around middle age, with a thin layer of hair on his head. As we walk the opposite direction, I started to see its skin so grey, covered in wounds and its flesh was decomposing. It was a walker.
It seemed as I could see myself to it. We were both walking down a lonely road by ourselves. But this thing has got no one. I still have my family. It saw me but something flashed in my mind, that taking down this walker would just be a waste of time. It's half noon and it was already getting dark. I've got to be back to our place soon before they start to get really worried.
It headed towards me but I managed to avoid it, sending it to the ground. I just did the same thing with every walker I pass by on the road. It won't take a lot of killing because I have to save up my energy for a couple of miles I still have to go.
Until a signage met my gaze. It was the store my parents and I are staying at. I smiled as it felt coming home. I knocked on the front door to let them know that it was me. Dad opened the door and I walked in. Candles are lit, quite brightening up the atmosphere. It seemed as the three of us just went here for dinner but everything turned in to chaos since the virus hit.
"Dinner is ready." Mom said, beaming a smile to me.
They look so happy seeing me. Words aren't enough to describe how they make me feel so strong.
I sat with them. "Guess what?" I said teasingly.
"What?" They both said with curiousity.
"I got a couple of canned foods, enough to last a day." I smirked.
"Really? That's great." Dad said. "We thought we'd be eating dust the other day." Joked mom, making us all laugh.
We talked and laughed, enjoyed each others' company, and savored the good things that are left in life. Just when we are finished, someone let out a loud scream.
"HELP!" The man said. His noise was coming from the back door. "I know someone's possibly here!" He said, knocking aggressively.
We heard groans coming closer and we knew he was being chased by walkers. I looked at dad to see he was already looking at the back door, with worries showing up at mom's face.
"I have to help." Dad said in determination.
"But we all know its too dangerous. You can't just go out risking your own life for the sake of others." Mom answered with coldness in her voice, trying to stop him from what he was planning to do.
I could feel the tension rise in that very moment. I ran out of words as I was still in shock in this hellish situation.
"I have to do what I think is right! For god's sake there's still humanity!" With a raging voice, dad grabbed his hammer and walked away from the discussion.
"Dad!" I screamed, making it unbearable for me to stop the rears from building up.
He started heading to the back door and just when he opened it, we saw two walkers have landed themselves to the defenseless man. The two mindless creatures tore his stomach apart, leaving it wide open with his blood and intestines around. The man was still screaming and reaching his arms to us, begging for help. But we knew it was too late. His screams have stopped for he has lost too much blood. We're still frozen from where we stood as we saw how the walkers feed on the man's motionless body, with his eyes wide open at us.
Until dad broke the silence, "Wait here." I grabbed him by his arm but he insisted.
"Let go of me." He nagged, completely leaving the back door.
I was about to go after him but mom stopped me by closing the door. She tried to comfort me with the words "We have trust him, sweetie." The next thing I saw was dad walking towards the extremely unpleasant scenario.
Couple of minutes have passed and all surrounded us was silence. Until I heard something was shuffling at the back door. I was in high hopes it was dad. I peered through the gap and saw a familiar figure. It knew it was him.
I opened the door with excitement and dad headed straight towards mom who was just in front of the door. I started to cry tears of joy seeing him holding tight of mom. But why is her cloth turning red? Why am I seeing blood? Why is dad tearing off her flesh on her shoulder?
Holy shit.
Dad was bit and now he has turned.
"Run." Whispered mom, reaching out her hand for me.
I don't know what to do or where to go as dad drawn his attention to me. He was just here alive and in a minute he has become one of those things.
Dad started to walk towards me. His eyes were eerie white. I grab hold of my gun and pointed it to his head. I started to feel hot traces of my tears streaming down my face, making my entire vision blurry.
He's getting close.
With my shaking and slippery hands, I pulled the trigger and the growling stopped. He fell to the ground. I walked closer to him to see he wasn't moving.
"I am sorry, dad." I whisphered to him, wiping off my tears.
I walked pass his body and closed the back door, knowing that the gun shot might alerted the roamers around the area. I went to mom just to see she was bit.
"Mom?" I said, resting her head on to my lap.
"Erin?" She replied, giving me a weak smile. "There's something I want you to do."
"No, mom. Please don't ask me to do it." Tears started to fall down my cheeks again. I knew what she wants me to do.
"Please Erin, don't let me turn." She said as I felt her cold hands to my face, trying to wipe off my tears.
She was cold but she was sweating. The virus might have started to damage her brain. I held my knife before it completely gotten in to all of her.
"I'm sorry, mom. I love you." I closed her eyes and the next thing I knew was those were the last words I whispered to her before thrusting my knife in to her head. She was still lying in my lap, or I should say her body. There are no more tears falling from my eyes as I drained them all.
I lost my family. It's the only safe place I could find, and now they're gone. I just feel lost.
