Adelaide’s texts are like this*

Chapter 4

Being up at two a.m. wasn’t exactly my cup of tea. I had nearly fallen asleep in the shower, making an actual cup of tea, and getting dressed. The fact that we even had to be on a plane that early made my headache intensify.

“Hello?” I asked groggily into my phone. Whoever called me that early better have been damn happy I was awake.

“Niall?” My mood immediately perked up. “Niall, if you’re not too pissed off at me can I have a ride to the airport? My stupid fucking car won’t start.”

“Adelaide?” I asked, still registering she was on the other end of the phone. “Uh, yeah, sure. I’ll be there in five.” I hung up and threw the car into reverse. She called me. Adelaide chose my number out of her contacts and called me when she needed help. I glanced in the rear view mirror and saw the huge smile that was on my face. I’d been a downer for five days, refusing to go out or change clothes, but one two minute phone call with her and my whole mood was flipped upside down.

I pulled up to the curb outside her house not even ten minutes later and waited. It was still dark out and awfully cold. I waited a few moments and went to unbuckle my seat belt. Deciding against it, I grabbed my phone from the center console.

Hey. It’s Niall, you um called me. I’m outside.

Wow, nice going idiot. I reread the text over and over realizing how stupid I sounded. Shaking my head, I squeezed my eyes shut and swore. Without warning, there was tapping against my window. Looking up, Adelaide was squinting into the window. I opened the door and stepped out.

“Hey,” I said, looking at her. She had on a sweatshirt that was far too big and pajama pants with penguins on them.

“Thank you so much,” she said quietly. I nodded my head and walked to the trunk and popped it open. After helping her put all her luggage into it, we both got in the car. “I’m sorry for calling you this early.”

“It’s fine. I was up,” my voice was very monotone. Adelaide played with the material of her pants and chewed on her bottom lip. I squirmed slightly in my seat. She needed to stop that.

“I’m sorry for not texting back.” I glanced in the rear view mirror, not saying a thing. “I just don’t want to lead you on. To anything. I was serious when I said I don’t have-“

“It’s fine,” I cut her off. I didn’t need to hear her say I had no chance again, not even to be friends. The whole rest of the way we were quiet.

We pulled into the airport and I saw Louis standing by his car with Zayn. I parked next to them and got out. Adelaide got out too and her eyes widened when she saw the other boys.

“I’ll take your bags in,” I said. She looked at me and then nearly ran into the airport. Louis and Zayn broke out into chuckles and I shook my head.

“What was that about?” Zayn asked, rubbing his chin. I shrugged and leaned against Louis’ car.

“Are you hitting that yet?” Louis asked, turning towards me. My cheeks burned red and I shook my head. “What are you waiting for?!”
