Ever been to Australia?
I glanced back at my laptop, ready to purchase two tickets to the down under. Australia was always an exciting place to go. While it was becoming cold in London, it was just ready to enter summer there. Melbourne, where we’d be going, has beautiful beaches, an amazing city life, and best of all, no one would know we’d be there.
Waiting for Adelaide to reply felt like it took ages instead of minutes. My hands were jittery and I was hoping she’d come. We had a great time the last time she was over. Watching Harry Potter, throwing popcorn at one another, and the best part was that we cuddled. It was simple and innocent, but I couldn’t help but wonder what it meant.
Nooo?
Adelaide’s response lit up my phone and I opened the message. Nervousness crept over me as I replied, asking if she’d like to come with me. It was sort of out of the blue and I was hoping she didn’t have plans for the next few weeks. I could see it now; her in a swimsuit laid out on the sand and me sneaking pictures whenever she wasn’t looking. I’d take her out to dinner in the boisterous city with only the buildings lighting up the streets. I could see her bundled up in a bed in a hotel fast asleep.
My phone buzzed in my lap and I looked down to see Adelaide was calling me. A smile swept across my face and I hit the answer button.
“You’re joking, right?” she asked before I could greet her. I let out a laugh.
“I’m not,” I said. “It’d be a great time, I promise. There’d be no crowds, just the locals. We won’t get bombarded. It’d give us space to just hang out. Besides, we’d be there for a few weeks, then it’d be tour and we’d have to go there anyways.” I stopped talking and waited for her to respond.
“I don’t know,” Adelaide said slowly. I leaned back in my desk chair and closed my eyes.
“Please? For my birthday?” It was less than a month until then, but I knew it’d get her to come. I didn’t know how, but it would.
“Goddammit,” she mumbled. “Where in Australia?” I smiled and clicked the mouse on my computer, making it light up again.
“Melbourne,” I said, reading over the ticket information. “We’d leave tomorrow night.” Adelaide swore again and then went silent.
“Okay,” she finally said. I couldn’t help my grin as I hopped onto my feet. “A little more notice in advance would have been fucking great, though.”
