Lacy had all of the boys bring the materials to the theatre. Bam, Billy, and Matt sat down with her to discuss the payment. They sat down at the table she had found at a garage sale. Lacy pulled out the list of jobs that needed to be done. Lacy started "Okay, my grandparents in Arkansas are paying for your services." Bam interrupted her to say "How do we know if they will really pay us when they live so far away." "My grandparents have already sent me the money. I will pay a set amount each week." Billy steps in to ask "How much would we be payed each week?" Lacy answered with a straight face and said "Would a thousand per week do it?" Matt nodded his head, looking at his father and brother to agree with him. All three men stood and shook her hand.
The family started out with cleaning the entire building. As the day progressed, Noah and Lacy stared at each other all day long. Each time they had to speak to one another, it was awkward and they were lost for words. Lacy waved goodbye to the Brown family as she walked down the gravel road to her house.
A month later it was time to bring the electricity to the building. Lacy knew that Noah would be spending a lot of time at the theatre. She was actually nervous. As each room was given power, the lights were hung. The last place to receive power was the stage. Noah wanted to stay over a few nights at the theatre to make sure all of the lights were ready for the first play to held in four months, with auditions are a week after they finish the project. Lacy had invited Noah to sleep on the couch in her house down the road instead of the sleeping bag on the stage. Noah had agreed. Lacy was cooking dinner when Noah had come inside the house.
Noah POV
I was nervous as I walked down the street to Lacy's house. I was tired from the long day's work to see smoke coming from the chimney. I walked closer to the house to see Lacy cooking dinner for the two of us. She was wearing an outfit that she wore a lot. She had on jeans with a band's name on her t-shirt that I had never heard of and a plaid shirt over it. She was also barefoot. I opened the door as she turned and smiled at me. I thought she was even more beautiful when she would smile. I loved the feeling that she might be the one but I also felt that way with Christy.
We had an amazing dinner of baked chicken with cornflakes on the chicken and green beans. She said that her mom used to make that a lot when she was a teenager. Lacy had fixed up her couch for me with purple sheets and a black blanket. Her couch was very comfortable. I could hear Lacy walking around her room until she turned her light out. The same scene took place over the next few weeks as they grew closer. Talking about their childhoods, fears, past loves. One night after finally finishing the stage with all of the lights. Lacy was thrilled when the stage was finally completed. She cried and I wanted to wrap my arms around her and be happy with her.
On my last night, she had received a call in the middle of the night. She started yelling. "Why would I ever let you back into my life after what you had done to me? I would never sleep with your or send you dirty pictures! I actually have morals!" She fell silent as I guess the person on the other line was talking. The light from her bedroom flooded the rest of the house. She was crying hysterically. She turned on the light above the table as she sat in a chair. I had finally seen her without make up, her hair wasn't pulled up, and she had on sweat pants and a t-shirt. She looked over at me. Her eyes and face were blood red as she continued to cry. I usually don't show very many emotions but tonight was different.
I got up from the couch to walk towards the table and I pulled out a chair to sit in front of her. "What's wrong?" I asked. "A guy that I liked from college called me and said he was coming into Hoonah tomorrow. I wonder how he found me. His name is Leo and he was the first guy to give me any attention. He wanted to have sex with me but I told him no. He suggested that I could send him dirty pictures instead and I told him no. He told me I would never be a good girlfriend to anyone if I didn't do what I was told." As each word came from her month, I became angry. How could anyone be so cruel to this beautiful woman? Before I knew what was happening, my hand reached up to wipe her tears. I told her I would see her in the morning. I kissed her forehead.
Lacy POV
Noah had just kissed my forehead. It felt as if he might be the one. I walked back to my bedroom but turned around to say thank you. I shut my door, turned to light back off and walked back over to my bed.
The next morning, I woke early to get ready for the day. Leo's words from all of those years ago rang inside my head like bells on a church steeple. I walked into the living room with Noah sitting at the dining room table tapping his thumb on the table. It looked as if he was deep in thought. I started making eggs. He didn't even move. I made up two plates of eggs and brought them to the table. He finally looked up when the plate was set in front of him. He smiled at me as he ate his food. His family was meeting Noah at the dock to bring him back home. The entire walk was silent as we walked to the dock. I took his arm the entire way. I felt safe. We saw the Integrity pull up to the dock. Noah passed his bags up to Gabe. He looked backed at me to take my hands as they shook. "Do I need to stay with you when Leo comes to see you?" "No, he won't hurt me. He is all bark but not bite." "I need to ask you something." "Of course, what is it?" "Will you marry me?" I was about to answer as I heard Leo call my name as he walked towards me.
