Stefan was upstairs, readying for school three days, almost four days later.
I was down in the basement, checking on our brother Damon.
"Where's my ring?" Damon asked weakly as I peered through the barred-hole in the door.
"Won't be needing it anymore," I said.
Damon groaned. "How long have I been here?"
"Three days," I answered.
"What are you doing?" Damon asked in a whine.
"During the Dark Ages, when a vampire's actiond threatened to expose or bring harm upon the entire race, they would face judgement. They sought to reeducate them rather than to punish them." I looked to the side. "Do I have that right? Stefan told me. You should ask him."
Damon ignored my trying to lighten the mood. "You know what will happen if I don't feed on blood."
"You'll grow weaker and weaker," I said. "And, eventually, you won't be able to move or speak. In a week, your skin will desiccate, and you'll mummify. A living corpse. Unable to hurt anyone. Ever."
"So, what, you're just gonna leave me in the basement forever?"
"Stefan's injected you with enough vervain to keep you weak. Once your circulation stops, we'll move you to the family crypt," at the end, I added a little sarcasm and cuteness, "and then in 50 years, we can reevaluate."
"I'm stronger than you think."
"You always have been. But you're not stronger than the vervain, and we both know it." For the first time since I had come down here, I let myself be serious, the slight taunting tone disappearing and showing how sorry and guilty I really felt. "I'm sorry." Damon didn't answer. "Didn't have to be this way."
I slowly moved away from the cell door, turning and walking down the hall and to the stairs so I could walk up the stairs to the main level.
I heard Stefan and Zach talking in the kitchen, and I walked toward the sounds until I was there.
"He's awake," I said as I walked in. "He's weak, but it's probably best to stay out of the basement. He's Damon. I'm not sure how dangerous he still might be."
Stefan nodded, starting to turn around as Zach asked, "You're going to school?"
"Came here to live a life," Stefan answered. "It's about time I get back to that. And Elena, if she's still speaking to me."
"Why haven't you called her?" Zach asked.
"What am I supposed to do? Feed her another lie? I hate lying to her, Zach. I'm not good at it. She already thinks I'm hiding something."
"What choice do you have?" I asked, surprised he never thought if this before. Also a little annoyed. "You came back here because you wanted to live as normal a life as you could. You knew this was gonna be a part of it."
Stefan looked down, then back up. "You still going to school?"
"Sure," I said. "Why not? Beats sitting at home here, having nothing to do and hating myself."
For what we did to Damon.
I walked after him, and we walked out of the kitchen as he said, "We didn't have a choice, Kaylin."
"There's always a choice," I disagreed. "We just picked the one that would save the most lives."
We continued to walk down the hall as Stefan said, "I have a feeling that getting out of the house isn't the only reason you want to go to school." I looked at him like I didn't know what he was talking about, but he knew that I did, and he gave me a look that said it. "You know what I'm talking about."
