Flashback

I saw my brothers trying to release Katherine from the carriage when Damon was shot.

"No!" I cried. "Damon!"

I took both edges of my gown as I ran toward them, watching as Stefan reached for the gun when he was shot.

"Stefan!"

I reached them, kneeling to them as the tears flowed. "No!"

The men ran toward us as Katherine told me raspily, "Kaylin."

I looked toward her with tears. "Katherine."

"You'll see them again."

No one else heard her, two men taking hold of my arms, pulling me away as I cried, "No!"

Two other men carried Katherine back to the carriage, the last one, the one who had my brothers shot, turned me toward him.

My eyes filled with shock and horror as I recognized him, hitting against his chest. "You! You killed them!"

The edge of his gun, the long spear pierced through my gown and skin into my stomach. I whimpered as it pierced through my back.

I leaned into his shoulder as he killed me, pulling the spear out of my body. I gasped as I fell to the ground next to my brothers.

The ending I wanted.

I breathed heavily when I woke, gasping because it felt as if I hadn't took a breath in a hundred years.

"You're all right," a familiar voice said, and I turned to look at Emily.

"How am I . . ." I trailed off in confusion. "How am I alive?"

"You're not . . .completely," Emily answered as she knelt next to me. "You're in transition to become a vampire, Kaylin. You had vampire blood in your system when you were killed."

"What?" I asked. "How? Who?"

"I wish I could know the answer to tell you. All I know is that your wine from last night was laced with blood. But if it was Katherine's or someone else's, I couldn't tell you."

"Who else could it have been?" I asked.

"Annabelle . . ." Emily trailed off, my eyes widening, my breath quickening as I looked away. She was a vampire? Emily took my hand, sliding a ring on my finger. "If you choose to finish the transition, you'll need this."

"Where are my brothers?"

Emily's gaze trailed down to the river, where both my brothers sat together, a shirt covering Stefan, but Damon's chest and back bare as I slowly walked toward them, sitting on the other side of Damon.

"I woke up last night," Damon said. "I didn't know where I was. I went to the church. And I watched them drag her inside. Then they set fire to it. And the whole church went up into flames. They killed her. She's gone."

I looked down at the device in Damon's hands. "Did you ever figure out what that is?"

"Nope," Damon answered as Elena walked in. "Whatever it is, it doesn't work."

"Pearl didn't say anything else about it?" Elena asked.

"She thought she was stealing his vampire compass, but that was a pocket watch," I answered. "That Jonathan Gilbert was a crazy scientist."

Damon looked at Elena. "Have you spoken to your uncle lately?"
