Clem's POV
It wasn't until this morning at seven that I remembered that Tate left a small message on the chalkboard. The message said, 'Meet me in the basement at 2 am tonight'. He had told me about it yesterday, but, being the stupid person that I am, I forgot to come.
"Shit!"I said to myself.
I decided that I should go to the basement now to see if he's there. Better late than never. Luckily, my mom was still asleep and my dad had left already because he had a business meeting back in Washington for some reason. I crept down the stairs as quietly as possible, and walked over to the basement door. I I opened the door and walked down the basement stairs.
"Tate?" I called. "Tate?"
I began to walk around the basement calling Tate's name. I checked every room except for one. I walked into that room, and I heard something shuffle around on the floor.
"Tate, I know you're down here," I said.
The lights in the room began to flash.
"I know that's you, Tate," I said, starting to get a little nervous.
All of a sudden, something pops up out of nowhere. It had sharp teeth, black eyes, and it was bald except for a few little wisps of hair, and it tried to pin me down on the floor.
"Get off of me!" I yelled at the creature.
The creature was getting closer and closer to my face. The thing was trying to scratch my face with its claws.
"Thaddeus stop!" a familiar voice said.
It was Tate and thank God he was there. The creature got off of me and crawled away into the darkness. Tate could tell I was super freaked out, and he helped me up then pulled me into a hug.
"It's okay," Tate said to try and calm me down. "I'm here. Where were you?"
"I'm sorry I didn't come. I just saw your note on the chalkboard this morning. That's why I came down here."
"Clem!" my mom shouted from upstairs. "I heard screaming! Are you okay?"
"I gotta to go," I said. "I'll meet you here at 3. I promise."
"Clem!" my mom called again.
I quickly ran up the stairs, and of course my mom, being the cautious person she is, was walking around with a knife.
"Mom?" I said.
"What!?" my mom screamed.
"It's just me. Calm down," I said.
"Where were you?" my asked still holding the knife.
"Mom, put the knife down. I was just walking around," I lied.
"I heard screaming. Why were you screaming!?"
"I walked into a spiderweb with a spider in it," I fibbed again.
"Oh. Thank God you're okay," my mom said with relief.
I went to my bedroom and got ready for school, which I absolutely hate. I put on some lace tights, a black dress, and a plaid, over sized flannel shirt. Finding a pair of shoes to wear wasn't hard because I have one pair of shoes; black converse.
"I'll just ride my bike to school today," I said as I came down the stairs.
"Okay honey, be careful!" my mom shouted as I walked out the front door.
"Please, don't call me honey!" I told her on my way out.
After School . . .
It was 2:47, and Tate was probably still in the basement. Since I had keys to the front door, I unlocked it and went in. Of course, my mom had the alarm on and I set it off. I went to the little pad thingy with numbers on it and dialed to code to shut it off.
"Clem, can you help me load up the dishwasher?" my mom yelled from the kitchen.
"Yeah. Just give me a minute," I yelled back.
I was too lazy to go to my room and put my bag up there, so I just dropped it near the front door.
"Clem, don't forget to put your bag away. And why are going in the basement?" my mom asked.
"I wanna check it out," I lied. "I haven't seen it yet."
I started to walk down the stairs, and I had made sure that I closed the door.
"Tate?" I called.
He came out from one of the rooms.
"Hey," Tate said.
"Hey," I said. "We should do something. You know, together."
"Like what?" Tate replied.
"I don't know. We should go out or toilet paper someone's house 'cause it's Halloween."
"Clem, I'm gonna go food shopping, so don't leave the house or open the door. Put the alarm on too. And don't forget to load up the dishwasher!" my mom told me.
She slammed the door shut, and left. I saw her black Jeep pull out of the driveway and into the street through one of the basement windows.
"Is that just how you communicate; yelling at each other?" Tate asked jokingly.
"Not all the time," I laughed, and I don't laugh very often. "Wanna go hang out in my room?"
"I thought we were gonna go out and toilet paper someone's house," Tate said a little disappointed.
"We should wait until it gets dark out, if we're gonna toilet paper someone's house," I said. "Plus, my mom is probably gonna be at the grocery store for at least 3 hours because she has no idea on where everything is and what to do with it."
"Okay, then lets go to your room and listen to music."
