One of the consequences of not paying attention when you’re supposed to was that you missed valuable information. Like when Ray, Nathaniel’s Beta, gave Nathaniel some upsetting news while I was trying to calm my raging hormones. I was too focused on keeping a tight leash on my wolf, who wanted nothing more than to rip the clothes off of our mate, that I only caught half of the conversation.
Something about someone being on the territory..
“Tell me exactly what happened,” Nathaniel growled through the receiver.
Normally I would’ve given Nathaniel all the privacy he needed, but this was about the pack and possibly even about Joshua. That was enough for me to focus all my attention on the conversation.
The angry look on Nathaniel’s face made me all the more worried. My eyes were glued on Nathaniel as I tried my best to make sense out of Ray’s murmurs. He was talking in a low voice as if he was secretly talking to Nathaniel. I took a step closer to Nathaniel to be able to follow the conversation.
Nathaniel glanced my way when he saw me moving closer. ‘You should hear this too,’ he said through our mind link and motioned with his hand for me to come closer. My wolf was almost jumping up and down from happiness, because he was including us.
‘Calm down,’ I ordered my wolf.
“She was causing trouble because we wouldn’t let her through, but I’ve got the situation under control now. I just called to inform you about her arrival,” Ray told Nathaniel through the phone. She? That made me cross Joshua off my list. My mother was the next one to be crossed off, because if she was here there was no way Nathaniel would be mad about that. Nor would he let Ray deal with that situation.
“Unbelievable. After all she did she still has the nerve to show her face,” Nathaniel said sounding furiously and slammed his fist on his desk. The desk shook from the impact, making an open bottle of water tip over. I caught it midair before it could land on the ground and spill even more water, and placed it on the desk again.
Ray’s voice was heard again, which made me stop moving. “You know how Lindsey gets when she sets her mind into something,” Ray responded.
I let out a breath I didn't know I was holding after hearing Lindsey's name being dropped. I was relieved that it wasn’t another disaster. Lindsey was an obstacle we could easily handle.
Since there was no threat I was more able to focus on calming Nathaniel down, who looked like he was about to explode into his dark blue wolf. His free hand was still set in a tight fist so I grabbed it with both hands. I slipped my hand into his and entwined them. He visibly relaxed when he felt the current between us and gave a grateful look.
“What did she set her mind on this time?” Nathaniel asked, using a much calmer tone.
“To tell you that the jerk is preparing to paying us a visit really soon,” Ray answered.
“How does she know that? Never mind. I almost forgot those two are pretty close,” he snapped and tightened his grip on my hand. Luckily for me, I could handle the pressure he was putting on my hand with my werewolf genes. With my thumb I trailed circles on the back of his hand. That made him snap out of his angry daze and realize the pressure he was putting on my hand. He loosened his grip immediately and even though he knew he didn’t hurt me he mouthed “I’m sorry.”
Ray’s sigh was heard through the receiver. “It’s not like that. At least, that’s what she’s claiming. Someone tipped her off.”
“Who? Another one of her ‘friends’?” Nathaniel replied sarcastically.
