-Chapter 20: Hospitals and Hearts

I opened my eyes as singing greeted my ears and I looked over at the person in a chair. I closed my eyes instantly as the light stung my eyes and I sighed. Why can’t the light be more welcoming? I hate how it burns my eyes whenever I open them.

“Are you awake?” Jae’s voice asked as the singing suddenly stopped. “Sorry about the singing. I couldn’t help myself.”

I opened my eyes again and looked at him. “I know I’m not in heaven right now,” I muttered out as I forced myself to sit up. “I’m in a stupid hospital bed right now and there is slight pain in my shoulder. How bad did I get shot?” I looked down at my body and I noticed wraps all around my right upper arm and my right shoulder.

Jae grabbed a button and touched it, moving my bed up a bit. “You should be comfy while you in the bed. Your mom was here earlier and she gave you a bath. I helped with picking out the clothes and that’s it. I didn’t want to see you without clothes on. I thought that would be disrespectful and rude.”

“Did the nurse let my mom do that?” I asked with a laugh.

“Yeah, she did. She helped with it,” Jae told me. “I hope it’s not embarrassing that someone saw you in the nude. I wouldn’t want you to be embarrassed about something like that. You need to stay clean so you don’t get any issues from not being clean.”

“You mean diseases, infections, and germs?” I looked at him and he nodded. “Don’t worry; I’ll be fine as long as I have you and this hospital. I think the doctors and nurses here know what they are doing.”

“My family came here while you were out and while I was at the gift shop. Mi-Yun has hired you a lawyer and Zack has admitted to what happened. You don’t have to worry about a trail right now since it looks like you won’t have to deal with one. Zack is going to probably take a deal. Mi-Yun has convinced her lawyer and the D.A. to consider one since Zack is cooperating.”

I smiled. “Thank you for feeling me in on that. I don’t wish for any bad on Zack. Maybe he’ll learn that I’m not worth the trouble he is going to go through now. I don’t think I’m worth going to jail for. I would never want someone to have to go to jail because of wanting me or something like that. Do you know what I mean?”

“Yes, I know what you mean,” Jae replied and he smiled softly. “I forgive him for what he did to me and you.”

“You do?”

Jae nodded. “Yeah, I do. I don’t see a point in holding a grudge against someone and being upset over things. You lived so there is no real reason to be upset with him. I’m just glad he didn’t hit you too bad. It didn’t hit anything but the skin. It missed your shoulder blades by an inch or two but it did tear some muscles. The doctors are discussing their options. You might have to be in a sling.”

“I rather be in a sling than be dead.”

“I agree with that.”

“It’s a small price to pay for surviving,” I said as I looked over at the door. “Hey, look!” I pointed at a shadow.

Jae turned towards the doorway and his sister appeared. “Hello,” she said looking at me. “I’m sorry for not being able to help you much a week ago.”

“Wait, what? I have been out for a week?”

Mi-Yun nodded. “Yeah, you’ve been out cold for a while. You were placed into a coma by the doctors due to the extreme pain you were in. You don’t remember whining about all the pain? Besides, the surgery almost killed you because they didn’t have someone to give blood. They ran out of your blood type and I remembered Jae is a universal donor with his blood.”
