|Chapter 4|

"Sure?" I guessed as Ross pushed me towards her.

"To show your 'halo', if you will," he said using air quotes, "You want to focus on your aura. Focus on everything that makes you heavenly."

I snorted by accident and he gave me a semi-stern look.

"I don't know," I bit my lip. "Can't I try it on you first?"

"I see your angelic side just perfectly right now," he admitted and for a brief moment he looked me up and down. "And we've got to be quick. I only have three months with you, Nova. Chop chop."

With his last word he pushed me into the woman and I collided with her. Needless to say she was not amused by my sudden appearance nor was she forgiving. I was roughly shoved away from her.

"Watch it circus freak," she scolded. My eyes widened at the harsh words. It had to have been about my eyes. I took a step back and glanced at Ross worriedly who was conveniently ten feet away at this point, looking in a store's window.

Warily I turned back to my guinea pig and took a deep breath. She noticed me staring intently at her and flicked her sunglasses up. I saw cold blue eyes that could possibly cut steel and I'm not going to lie and say I didn't flinch.

"Can I help you?" she asked and narrowed her eyes. "Or are you just going to stare at me?"

I tried ignoring her and focusing harder, but she didn't seem to be in awe of anything and when she took a step towards me I panicked.

"I'm an angel," I blurted. Her eyes widened, but not the extent where I thought it actually worked.

"You actually are a freak," she pursed her lips and leaned away from me. That hurt slightly, but I reached out to grab her arm. I concentrated with all my might until she jerked away from me harshly.

"Touch me again and I'll show you what to be afraid of," she hissed.

Thankfully Ross came to my rescue, but he seemed too nonchalant about it for my liking.

"Forget this ever happened," Ross waltzed up and looked at her intently. "My friend here lacks a little confidence."

The cold eyed woman left without another word and I stared open mouthed at my mentor.

"Lacks confidence?" I repeated the words from yesterday to Carson who was leaning beside my locker. "Can you believe he said that? And to my face! In front of her face! How am I supposed to work with the guy?"

"What are you wearing?" Carson ignored my frustration and eyed my outfit. I slowly looked down at myself and pursed my lips.

"It's called a skirt, Carson," I rolled my eyes and turned back to my locker, avoiding his gaze.

"You've worn plenty of skirts before, Nova," he said casually. "But this is different."

"Nova?"

I turned and forced a smile on my face for Drew. I didn't want him to know I was upset about something especially when he wasn't allowed to know the cause for my unrest.

"What are you wearing?" he asked.

"It's a skirt," I frowned immediately.

"It's...different," he murmured, furrowing his brows.

"Have you never seen me look like a girl before? Geez, you guys! It's just a little something different--"

"Your hair's curled," Carson interrupted.
