Chapter 8:
I walked into the clearing to meet Dmitri. He smiled slightly, and it seemed almost fake. I smiled politely and answered any questions he asked me.
Whenever I talked, he didn't seem to listen. It was like he tuned me out whenever he heard my voice. I was irritating, but I thought of uniting the packs, wanting to make my father proud.
Dmitri and I talked until the sun was setting, and when he stood up to leave, I saw a burlap sack in his hand.
"Dmitri, what is that?"
He acted like he didn't understand me. "What is what?"
I breathed slowly, already annoyed. "What is in the burlap bag?" I tried to speak sweetly, my stomach doing flip flops.
He smirked slightly. "Just a...surprise... I will be bringing to the next full moon."
And with those words, he walked away, the bag swinging wildly as he strode out of the clearing casually.
I sat down in the clearing once more, and waited for Puck to come see me. I knew he would show up out of nowhere, like he always did. I smiled a bit as I thought of our childhood.
The sun set and a small sliver of the moon rose, but Puck hadn't shown up. I sighed and stood up, slowly walking back to my house, wondering if I had upset him so much that he didn't want to be near me anymore. Suddenly, my mind flashed memories in front of my eyes.
Him hugging me tightly.
Risking his life to see me.
The brown-eyed screech owl in the clearing.
Saving my life from the hunters.
Not speaking when I asked him what kind of guy is right for me.
I pondered all of these memories as I entered my house and got ready for bed. Where was Puck, and why had he left me all alone?
