Chapter 7:

I could never tell her...

I kept walking, only lifting my head to make sure I didn't crash into the large oak trees that surrounded me. I made up conversations in my head; conversations I knew would never come to life.

"Aurelia, I will fight Dmitri for you!"

"Oh, Puck, you are so brave! Why would you ever risk your life for me?"

I would raise my head proudly while still looking at her, not missing a beat. "Because you are my one true love."

She would giggle and blush, turning a light pink. Then she would stand on tiptoe and kiss me quickly, but before she could move away I would grab her by the waist and resume the kiss passionately. I would fight Dmitri and win, of course.

My daydream ended when my face collided with a tree. I winced in pain, not even realizing what happened until I looked at the oak. I cursed as I spotted a small amount of blood on my hand; I had a nosebleed. A moment later, I saw a jet-black blur run passed me only a few yards away. I stood up and flattened myself against the tree. When I edged closer to look at what it was, I spotted Dmitri Romanoff changing back from his wolf form.

My hands clutched the bark on the tree with fury, ripping a chunk off. He heard the noise and turned his head, then sniffed the air. I covered my nose quickly, but not quick enough. The big ugly brute had started walking towards me, smiling maliciously. He knew who I was. If he saw me as a human, he would know when I joined the pack later. Right before I saw Dmitri turn the corner, I morphed into a small fox, hiding near the base of the tree.

He saw me instantly, glaring at me.

"Hello, Shifter. You have quite the nerve to come into this territory."

I just stared at him blankly, playing dumb, and he smirked.

"I know it's you, Shifter, and I will kill you in front of the packs on the next full moon, where everyone can see who you are and then I will be the true hero."

He tried to grab me by the scruff of my neck, but I bit him and moved to the side with grace. He winced and lunged again quickly. But I wasn't ready for the second attack. He grabbed me at lightning speed, pulling at my fur roughly, making me whimper in pain. He laughed darkly and stuffed me in a small burlap bag from his coat.

I cursed as I tumbled around in the bag, hoping to escape somehow. But as I swung back and forth in the dark bag, I heard a familiar voice.

"Dmitri?" Aurelia's voice spoke shyly and quietly, but I knew it was her instantly.

I could feel him stop walking. "Yes, it's me. How are you, Aurelia?"

They continued to talk, and I slowly fell asleep, hearing her voice.
