My boots met pavement with footsteps barely audible. I craned my head to the left as a police cruiser blared past in slow motion. It's alarms faded into the background as I sped up.The city streamed by on both sides in a kaleidoscope of luminescent street lights, glass skyscrapers and neon storefronts. I slowed to glance briefly at a group of pedestrians crossing the street in period costumes. Their garments displayed a motley of red brocade, black velvet and billowing sleeves. I smiled and resumed my trek.
It was one of Central City's proudest accomplishments- other than being the city the Flash hailed from- that it was the first city to promote the identity of every period in history. That is, to encourage the wear of clothing from any era. The idea had exploded through social media. Nowadays, it felt like a Halloween party that never stopped.
A collage of boutiques passed by sporting the latest fashions in their windows. Mannequins were dressed in the newest trend: steampunk. As I grew closer to the heart of the city, the shop displays became more and more elaborate, each trying to outdo the others. Halloween was slowly approaching and with it, the annual costume contest. The competition was fierce, many spent years making their costumes for a chance to win. The prize for first place hadn't been announced yet but word on the street was that it consisted of a great sum of money and a lifetime supply of Big Belly Burgers.
His shadow fell over my running figure and I slowed for his benefit. The hum of his wings buzzed through my ears. A crackle pierced my eardrum as the earpiece turned on. "You're late, Thawne"
"Since when have I ever been on time? Besides, I was just having a little fun with our dear, sweet friend, Carla" I said.
"Yes, very nice diversion. Was your defacement of the Flash Museum also part of this diversion?"
"Well, I had to find some way for her to follow me"
"And you couldn't have just ran by her?"
"Since when did you become the voice of reason? What of all the buildings you've lit aflame? Central Bank? Mercury Labs? That pizza joint down the street?"
"Hey! That last one was an accident!" He cried.
"If you say so" I dismissed. He dived into the street and swept towards me. I jumped to the side to avoid his wings. "Seth!" I yelled indignantly. He laughed through the earpiece and soared up around the buildings.
I growled and raced up and down the skyscrapers after him. Seth free fell back into the street. I ran in circles around him and careened onto a side street. "Would you two stop messing around!" Delilah snapped over the connection, "My babies are starting to get impatient!"
"See, Ravenna" Seth proclaimed, "That's the voice of reason"
I chuckled and tried to soothe Delilah, "Don't worry, we're almost there"
The large glass giants of the city fell back and brick and stone relics took their place. S.T.A.R. Labs loomed up on the horizon, the imposing structure that hadn't felt the touch of an architect in two centuries.
"Where's Delilah?" I asked scanning the immediate area.
"Look to your right" Seth answered.
I directed my attention to an approaching apartment complex on the right hand side of the street. Interwoven among its sixteen stories of red brick were thick, green vines. They swept along window frames burrowed through mortar drooping with the weight of a thousand crimson flowers.
