I walked out of the little gas station, twirling my new tree air freshener and whistling. "Heh, mom always said 'If you got it, flaunt it. And since you don't have anything, work with whatcha got and maybe you'll get some cute girls!'" Opening up the door to the red pickup truck my dad drove, I slung my bag of jerky in the center console and pet Hailey a little. I adjusted the rearview mirror and hung up the tree, noticing the number written on it. I was wondering why she gave that to me.
Starting up the rust bucket, I drove off and started on the highway again. I'd already been driving for a couple of days it felt like, and I had to stop and sleep for a while and then get back on the road. "Hailey, why didn't I just get a plane ticket?" She just kept looking at me as I continued on my raging river of complaints. Grabbing the jerky, I tore it open and fished out a piece. "Want one too?" I offered the only other one in the car, and she gladly accepted. "Why does Maine have to be so far from New York?"
After hours more of complaining, we finally rolled into the Big Apple. Good thing, too; I don't think the truck could've pulled off another couple of hours. Even Hailey needed a break. 'Hey, I'm here!' I sent a text to Josh, and he responded within seconds. 'Great! Meet me here.' After texting me the address, I entered it in my phone and drove around another couple of minutes, then arrived at my destination.
"Pete's Coffee?" I started at the sign and unbuckled my seat belt. Hailey was whining at my side, and I could tell she wanted to get out in the fresh air. Not that it was fresh or anything, we were in this huge city, but you know what I mean.
"Sorry Hailey, you gotta stay here. I'll be right back!" I smiled at my Yorkie and closed the door. She's so cute. The chime rang throughout the cafe as I looked around, searching for my best friend. Scanning the room, I saw him nervously shaking his leg in the middle of the shop. He was looking up at the menu, holding a cup of steaming coffee in his hands. Now that I think about it, it's really cold outside.. No wonder everyone's wearing heavy jackets.
"Hey Josh!" I made my way over to him, and he finally took notice of my presence. "Hey!" He almost jumped out of his seat, but then came down. "Aren't you cold?" I looked down. I was wearing my black pants, grey shirt, big, grey plaid jacket and some old boots. "No, not really." I said taking a seat. "You were always warm blooded." He smiled. Aww, my Joshy's so cute~ "Oh yeah, do you want something?" He started franticly looking around in all his pockets for is wallet, and I laughed at him. "I'm good, why don't we just go to your place? I've been driving all day and it sucks." His bright orange windbreaker stood out against everything in the white walled shop, and he stood up and got out of his seat. "Sure, follow me then."
His apartment was surprisingly close, and after driving for a couple minutes we went into the underground parking lot and slammed the doors to my car. "Jeez, you barely brought anything!" Josh exclaimed, towing my only suitcase to an elevator. "What do you mean? I took everything I thought I would need." I responded, adjusting the straps on my backpack and holding onto Hailey. Poor thing was so exhausted.
"And.. Here we are!" Josh proudly opened the door smiling. It was pretty big. Bigger than I expected, anyway. "Daang, man. This place is nice!" I dropped my backpack off my the couch and worked my way around the space. "Well, it's pretty nice, I guess." A slight smile started plastering his face as I pulled away the curtains blocking the outside view. "This is great for people watching!" The couch was close to the window, so if I laid out and hung my feet over the armrest I'd be able to see everybody moving around. If I sat regularly, I'd be able to watch Netflix all day. I threw myself on the soft fabric and looked out at the city. Best. Day. Ever. Besides the driving for hours. That part sucked.
"Oh yeah, I forgot to mention. I talked to the director, and he said to give you his number so you can call him later. He wanted to talk to you over the phone and then maybe meet you tomorrow for an interview or something." Josh said, walking over to the kitchen behind the couch. "Cool, give me his number and I'll call." I flipped over and watched him in the kitchen. "Want one? He asked, shaking a water bottle. "Sure." I answered, and he threw one over at me.
"So, what do you want to eat?" He asked, sitting down next to me on the couch and cracking open the plastic. "I don't know, what do you have?" He contemplated something in his head, then looked over. "Well, I really don't wanna do dishes, so Chinese or Thai?" Pshh, what a stupid question. Smiling, I gave him the clear answer "Chinese, obviously."
