"Alright, so, the Chinese place doesn't deliver, do you want to go with me to pick it up or stay here?" Josh asked me, taking a sip from his bottle.
"I just drove for days, I wanna get out and stretch my legs some more. Let's go!" I jumped up from the couch, eager to get my blood pumping again.
"What should we do with Hailey?" He gestured to my dog, who was already making herself at home on a little pile of blankets by where he was sitting.
"Oh, she'll be fine. I'll just put down on of her pee mats and get a bowl of food and water going and we'll be off." I went around to the back of the couch, where I left my backpack.
I'd brought a couple of pee mats, but I figured I'd just buy more when I got up here.
"May may! Here's the mat!" I got her attention for a split second, before she lazily up her head back down in the red blanket. She's so cute.
I put the mat in the corner by the window, and returned back to my backpack to pull out the food and water dishes. I poured out the remaining contents of my water bottle, and dumped some of the dog kibble I kept in the bag.
Moving them over by the mat so she'd be able to find them easily, I stood up and brushed the kibble dust on my pants.
"Alright, now let's go!"
Josh offered to drive over to the place, but seeing how close it was and how much I needed that walk, I turned it down. We held light conversation, talking about how he'd been waiting for me and how he cleaned up the place super nice for my arrival. Seeing how he described it before a few days ago, it was like a nuclear bomb had gone off.
We'd finally got to Luckies, the name of the 'greatest chinese food ever'. I'd have to actually taste it before I gave it my stamp of approval.
"Hello, welcome to Luckies! What do you want?" A nice looking older lady smiled at us over the counter.
"Ah, I'll take a half rice, half chow mein with orange chicken and house special beef." Josh glanced up at the menu, already knowing what he wanted. Besides telling me about his revaulting space, he'd also told me about this being the best chinese food he'd ever had.
Again, I still needed to try it before I tasted it. Seeing is believing, or in this case tasting.
"Umm, lets see.." I looked over the menu, carefully screening my options.
"I'll take an all chow mein, with sesame chicken and green bean beef, please."
"Hey, do you want part of an egg foo young?" I asked, looking over my shoulder at Josh. "Sure," he shrugged his shoulders.
"We'll also take an egg foo young." I smiled as she wrote it down on a styrofoam box. "Alright, next in line please!"
After a couple of minutes, our boxes came up at the cash register and Josh went up and paid. "So, how much do I owe you?" I asked, prepared to take out my cash. "Nah, this is on me." He smiled, and I frowned.
I don't like being paid for. I like to take it fair and square; and I don't like owing people. At all.
"It's alright, I got it. Besides, it's your first time eating at Luckies. Or in New York in general. If it really bugs you, you can pay next time." He said, walking out. "Who says I'll be coming here a second time?" I grinned as I followed him out.
"Oh, I know you will." He smiled down at me.
"You know, technically, this'll be my second time eating in New York." Josh raised an eyebrow. "I got some jerky coming down here, and a girl's phone number." I smiled, all cheeky.
